LOCAL OUTLOOK
A moist frontal zone will linger just to our southeast over the next few days allowing temperatures to drop below normal with light wintry precipitation possible for Friday and Saturday. A cold upper level trof will then re-amplify over the area later on Saturday and bring a shot of snow showers to the mountains. Cold temperatures will persist through Sunday before warming to near normal for early next week.

TODAY Winter Storm Warning 4 to 6 inches possible
Cloudy with rain and snow likely today. Highs below freezing in the higher elevations and the mid-30s in the lower elevations. Winds 3 to 5 mph out of the north. Snowfall accumulations in the 6 to 8-inch range above 3,000 feet and in the area of Scaly Mountain, Highlands and the higher elevations of the Cullasaja Community. The ridgeline between Macon and Jackson Counties will see snow in that range, too. The lower elevations will see varying amounts of snow. The Franklin area could see 2 to 6 inches today if the temperatures stay near freezing in the afternoon hours. This could go either way for us.

Cloudy with lows in the 20s and winds 3 to 5 mph out of the northwest. 50% chance of snow with an additional 1 to 3 inches possible overnight.
SATURDAY Windy with wind chills in the 20s
Partly sunny early, then decreasing clouds to become mostly sunny before noon. Highs ranging from the upper 20s in the higher elevations and the low to mid-30s in the lower elevations. Winds starting out 5 to 10 mph out of the northwest, increasing to 15 to 20 mph and gusting into the 35 mph range in the afternoon hours. Wind chills will make it seem like it is in the 20s for a good bit of the day.
SATURDAY NIGHT Windy and Cold
Partly cloudy with lows in the teens and wind chills even colder. Winds 15 to 20 mph out of the northwest, gusting in the 35 mph range.

Sunny with highs in the 30s.

HAZARDS
Hazardous weather is expected today. This will be the first significant winter storm of the season and roads could get very slippery today. If you don't have to be out and about, don't be. No matter how good of a driver you are in slippery conditions, please remember that there are loads of “motorists” out there who are not and they will be traveling faster than is safe and they will likely be getting into accidents. * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are expected, with localized amounts up to 8 inches above 5000 feet.
* WHERE...Portions of the central and southern mountains of North Carolina and the adjacent Foothills.
* WHEN...Until 7 AM EST Saturday.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times.
