Franklin, NC, November 15, 2017- The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct two prescribed burns this week on the Nantahala Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest, weather permitting.
On Thursday, November 16, a 1200-acre burn is planned in the Sugar Creek area of Little Canada in Jackson County. On Friday, November 17, a 1762-acre burn is planned in the Round Mountain area of Jackson County on the state line with South Carolina.
The goal of these understory burns is to reduce hazardous fuels on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires and improve wildlife habitat.
Public and firefighter safety is the highest priority. Be aware of the potential for smoke and firefighter traffic near the burn areas.
