Senate Republicans find Their Spine, Vote Against Auto Bailout Bill

Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.), the lead GOP negotiator, said the sides were on the brink of a deal on the amendment he had offered. Representatives from the United Auto Workers -- who were present for most of the negotiations -- would not agree to a specific date, Corker said.

"We offered any day -- any day -- in 2009," Corker said.

Minutes after the talks failed, the Senate voted on the bailout measure that had been approved Wednesday by the House on a largely party-line vote, 237-170. In the Senate, the vote was 52-35, eight votes short of the 60 needed to override a Republican filibuster. Of those voting yes, 10 Republicans joined 42 Democrats.

"It's disappointing that Congress failed to act tonight," the White House said in a statement. "We think the legislation we negotiated provided an opportunity to use funds already appropriated for automakers and presented the best chance to avoid a disorderly bankruptcy while ensuring taxpayer funds only go to firms whose stakeholders were prepared to make difficult decisions to become viable."

I am very glad that some Republicans have found their spines, and stood against this awful form of lemon socialism that was supported by the Democrats and President George W Bush. What worries me is that there was 10 Republicans who supported this socialist bill. They were: Kit Bond of Missouri, Sam Brownback of Kansas, Susan Collins of Maine, Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, Richard Lugar of Indiana, Olympia Snowe of Maine, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, and John Warner of Virginia.

Of those that are returning to the 111th Congress in January 2009, I would like to see investigations begun by their constituents for a suitable replacement to run in the primary. They should be reminded that the "R" beside their name should mean that they are opposed to socialism.

My US Senators split their votes on this with Burr voting against it and Dole voting for it.

That is interesting. On the earlier bailout bill, Burr voted for and Dole against. Are there no reliable Republicans available to be our Senators?

Here is the Roll Call on this vote. Why the online newspapers couldn't link to it is beyond me...goodness knows, they link to other stuff.

The next eight years are going to be very long indeed. I sure hope we get some relief in 2010, but I ain't holding my breath.

Congressman Shuler Votes With Republicans On Big Three Bailout

After battling through the weekend to reach a compromise with congressional Democrats, the White House yesterday dispatched Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten to sell the plan to restive Republican senators. But many GOP lawmakers emerged from a combative luncheon with Bolten unconvinced the plan would compel Detroit automakers to make the painful changes necessary to restore them to profitability.

After mostly partisan debate, the House voted 237 to 170 to approve the measure. But with Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) and other conservatives threatening to block consideration of the measure, even some Republican advocates of the bailout said it is unlikely to attract sufficient GOP support to win approval in the closely divided Senate.

"I don't think the votes are there on our side of the aisle," said Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio), a stalwart champion of the auto industry. "Some effort needs to be made to respond the concerns of my colleagues."

Congress Embraces New Media for Members

The Committee on House Administration adopted new web regulations that will permit Members to use outside websites like YouTube to communicate with constituents. The new regulations, which are based upon a proposal presented in June by GOP Members of the Committee, represent a vital step to providing new, uncensored channels of communication between Members of Congress and their constituents.

The new web regulations, which were adopted via Committee poll, permit Members to post content on outside websites so long as the content is for “official purposes,” and not personal, commercial or campaign related.

Yahoo! News has more coverage, and goes on to tell of concerns in the US House as proponents of the bill hunt for 12 votes to pass it there.

Here is a snippet:

In the final vote, 40 Democrats, 33 Republicans and independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut voted "yes." Nine Democrats, 15 Republicans and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont voted "no."

The rescue package lets the government spend billions of dollars to buy bad mortgage-related securities and other devalued assets held by troubled financial institutions. If successful, advocates say, that would allow frozen credit to begin flowing again and prevent a deep recession.

Even as the Senate voted, House leaders were hunting for the 12 votes they would need to turn around Monday's 228-205 defeat. They were especially targeting the 133 Republicans who voted "no."

Their opposition appeared to be easing after the Senate added $110 billion in tax breaks for businesses and the middle class, plus a provision to raise, from $100,000 to $250,000, the cap on federal deposit insurance.

They were also cheering a decision Tuesday by the Securities and Exchange Commission to ease rules that force companies to devalue assets on their balance sheets to reflect the price they can get on the market.

There were worries, though, that the tax breaks would cause some conservative-leaning Democrats who voted for the rescue Monday to abandon it because it would swell the federal deficit.

"I'm concerned about that," said Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., the majority leader.

As revised by the Senate, the package extends several tax breaks popular with businesses. It would keep the alternative minimum tax from hitting 20 million middle-income Americans and provide $8 billion in tax relief for those hit by natural disasters in the Midwest, Texas and Louisiana.

According to the Raleigh News & Observer, Burr will vote for the Bail Out, and Dole will against it.

Good for Senator Dole!!! You have come through for the working man.

Senator Burr, if this is true, you have disqualified yourself from consideration in 2010...as you have proven that you do not quite understand that using more socialism to cure a problem caused by socialism is not going to work. It will only breed more socialism, and more failure down the road.

YAY! Bailout Bill Fails First Vote

WASHINGTON — The $700 billion bailout of the financial industry failed to win congressional approval on Monday, with the House of Representatives rejecting the measure.
The measure could still be reconsidered today — if House Republicans request it. It was unclear whether that would happen, however.
The vote tally was 228 to 205, with 95 Democrats joining 133 Republicans voting against the package, which had been cobbled together during days of late-night negotiations. The leadership of each party consented to keep the vote open while they tried to twist arms in a failed effort to win a majority in the House.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by as much as 705 points during the wait. It recovered after the result was clear and was down less than 500 points shortly afterword.
The result was both a surprise, and yet not unexpected. The White House was confident that enough Republicans would support the controversial bill, which had won public support from key leaders.
But the bill also put representatives squarely at odds with their constituents, who'd flooded their offices in recent days with expressions of contempt for the proposed bailout.

GOP Members of the 110th Congress Discover They Can Be Citizen Journalists, Too

An historic event occurred Friday...

New technologies broke a news blackout attempted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Friday afternoon, 8/1/08, starting at 11:30 am (Eastern) Real Time News was the only window to a major event in the House of Representatives. The Democratic Party controlled-House had just voted to adjourn for a 5-week vacation without voting, or even engaging in debate, on solutions to America's energy crisis. As the Democrats went out to their gasoline-powered cars to drive to the airport to board jet fuel-powered aircraft, the House Republicans stayed on to present their All of the Above Energy Plan. Despite Speaker Nancy Pelosi removing the press from the gallery, and having lights, microphones and C-Span cameras turned off, media coverage continued, against House rules, entirely via Twitter and Qik live cell-phone video.

Thanks to Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) there was one small camera recording the events. Twitter messages alerted America to the historic events. Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) named the event "The New Boston Tea Party", but that was quickly changed to "The Boston Tweet Party" by the new, tech real-time media. Messages flew across the country to anyone wanting to participate, as Culberson led the Real Time Media charge sending out live messages from the House floor:

Commentary

I was under a blackout of my own, having suffered at the hand of malicious Googlebots for the 5th time in three years. I was able to continue blogging on a recently re-activated state and local issues blog and covered these events as they were happening.

I am glad to see ever more people begin to realize that they can bypass the Legacy Media and take the news directly to the consumer...and avoid the lefty Gatekeepers in the Media. Hurrah for the few Republican members who exhibited the kind of fighting spirit I was afraid had left the party when the cowards let Newt Gingrich be removed.

When are people going to follow my call, and begin broadcasting live from their local city and county government meetings? When are they going to start broadcasting live from candidate debates and campaign stops?

I already have. From a gubernatorial debate in Hendersonville to a regional radio show to a district GOP convention. I'll bet 75% of you reading this have the capability to do this without buying any additional equipment over $100. Think of it. The possibilities are only limited by your inagination and willpower.

The power of live event coverage can remove the ability of the lefty news media to "spin" the event to benefit their causes and candidates.

For my part, I plan on webcasting live all the debates between Mumpower and Shuler where I can attend. Wouldn't it be great if the same thing happened all across North Carolina, and the USA?

535 Neros Fiddle While Rome Burns

WASHINGTON - House Republicans on Thursday scuttled a bill that Democrats hoped would help lower gasoline prices by forcing the Energy Department to release 70 million barrels of oil -- about a three-day supply -- from the national stockpile.

Democrats vowed that the action would have produced immediate relief at the pump, as was the case with similar releases in 1991, 2000 and 2005. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve now holds about 700 million barrels.

Despite winning a clear 268-157 majority, the measure still lost. Democratic leaders had brought the proposal up for debate under rules requiring a two-thirds vote to pass.

But passing the bill by just a majority would have meant allowing Republicans to force a vote on new offshore drilling leases.

"They're hiding from a vote," said GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio. "They're scared to death to allow us to ... force their members to vote on drilling."

Commentary

This election is very important, and the Senate and US House Races are now more important than ever. Due to their boneheadedness, the GOP will be playing defense this year as they attempt to prevent the Democrats from obtaining a supermajority of 60 seats in the Senate (which is likely to happen), and increasing their lead in the House.

One way out of this "prevent defense" is for McCain to choose an acceptable conservative running mate with credibility in economic matters, and I believe that to be Mitt Romney. This wish to pry Bobby Jindal away from his state before he can fix it is stupid. Jindal has decades ahead of him before he need to consider running for President.
