License Plate Agency to Reopen in Jackson County

ROCKY MOUNT – The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will reopen a license plate agency (LPA) on March 26 in Jackson County. The office closed on Dec. 15, 2023, when the previous operator’s contract ended.

The agency, which will be operated by Jackson County Government, will be located at 876 Skyland Dr., at the Skyland Services Center in Sylva. The LPA will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, except on state holidays.

In North Carolina, NCDMV oversees LPAs, but the agencies are managed by private businesses or local governments.

LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags, handicap placards and duplicate registrations. There are 119 license plate agencies operating across North Carolina.

Services such as property tax payments and registration renewals can also be completed online at MyNCDMV.gov.

ROCKY MOUNT – An internet outage has interrupted service at numerous driver license offices and license plate agencies in central and western North Carolina, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles reported Wednesday.

AT&T, which provides internet service for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles offices, reported the outage at approximately 12:15 p.m.  

The outage is affecting 35 driver license offices and license plate agencies in portions of the southern Triad, the Charlotte area and portions of the eastern mountains and foothills.  Customers with scheduled appointments for this afternoon at affected Driver License offices will be rescheduled.

Officials with AT&T are not sure what caused the outage but are working to restore service as soon as possible. The company did not have a timetable for when service could be restored.

NCDMV officials are reminding people that many driver services, such as driver license and vehicle registration renewals, vehicle tax payments, and address changes, can be completed online without visiting an office. People can visit the official NCDMV website at MyNCDMV.gov, to learn if they can complete their business online.

The NC Department of Motor Vehicle Implements New Way to Avoid Waiting in Line

ROCKY MOUNT – The N. C. Division of Motor Vehicles continues to implement projects to improve the experience of its customers. The division’s latest endeavor is the Q-Anywhere project.

Q-Anywhere allows customers at driver license offices to check in by scanning a QR code and texting a short message to get and hold their place in line. Customers are then free to queue anywhere – they can wait their turn in their vehicle, or they can run other errands in the immediate area while they pass the time. Customers are alerted via text to enter the lobby when staff is ready to serve them.

“We continue to work to improve customer service at our DMV offices across our great state,” DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said. “This project frees people up to not have to wait in line at our offices, but rather, after scanning a QR code to check in, they can go to the bank across the street or grab a bite to eat while they wait for a text letting them know when we are ready to serve them.”

For customers without a cellphone, DMV is working to implement a mobile paging system like those used in the restaurant industry.

Q-Anywhere is up and running in just over half of the state’s 116 driver license offices. The remaining offices will be added in the coming weeks. It builds on previous DMV initiatives, including an ever-increasing number of services being offered online at MyNCDMV.gov and online appointment scheduling available at SkipTheLine.ncdot.gov.

“We encourage customers to skip the trip to the DMV and do their business online, if at all possible,” Commissioner Goodwin said. “If you must come into a driver license office for service, please make an appointment well in advance. And finally, make sure you bring all the needed documentation with you on appointment day.”

Summer is the DMV’s busiest time of year. In order to meet the increased demand across the state, DMV has hired more than 50 new driver license examiners, extended office hours at 25 locations, and added Saturday walk-in only hours at 16 locations.

Saturday Service Hours Temporarily Suspended at 16 Driver License Offices
Changes in operations in response to COVID-19 Delta variant

ROCKY MOUNT – Starting Sept. 4, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will temporarily suspend its Saturday services at the 16 driver license offices where services were available, to better protect customers and staff from the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

Temporarily suspending Saturday hours will reduce potential COVID exposures, as examiners who work on Saturdays typically travel from several offices to work together in one office.

Saturday service hours from 8 a.m.-noon will be suspended at the following driver license offices:

Saturday extended hours will be suspended until NCDMV determines it is safer to resume Saturday service. Saturday hours are for walk-in customers only.

 

Saturday hours were originally suspended in March 2020 due to the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic. Saturday services resumed in May 2021.

 

Tips if heading to a NCDMV office

Anyone considering a visit to the NCDMV should check to determine if they can complete their business online.

 

NCDMV already offers online access for many services, including driver license renewals, ordering duplicate licenses and ID cards, driving record requests, driver license office appointments, registration renewals, vehicle property tax payments, duplicate registration cards, ordering personalized and specialty plates, payment of insurance lapse fines, and applying for voter registration.

 

NCDMV encourages online appointment scheduling for weekday visits to driver license offices. However, walk-in customers are welcome. People can make an online appointment 90 days in advance.

RALEIGH – To assist N.C. Division of Motor Vehicle customers and partners in dealing with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, a provision included in the COVID-19 bill signed into law today by Governor Cooper grants a five-month extension of the expiration date on more than two dozen DMV credentials.
The bill also allows the DMV to waive any penalties for a late registration renewal during the extension period. Customers who already paid a $15 fee for a late renewal in March or April will be reimbursed.

Online Vehicle Registration Services Temporarily Unavailable for Maintenance Service interruption scheduled from Friday at 8 p.m. to Sunday at noon

RALEIGH – The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will suspend online vehicle registration services this weekend as part of routine scheduled maintenance by the N.C. Department of Revenue.

During the maintenance period, scheduled from Friday at 8 p.m. until Sunday at noon, NCDMV online vehicle registration services will not be available.

Customers will not be able to conduct several types of transactions, including renewing vehicle registration, ordering a duplicate registration, changing an address, paying vehicle property taxes or accessing the property tax estimator tool. Driver license services will not be affected by the maintenance period.

A notification to customers about the online suspension of services is available on the homepage of the NCDMV website.

Services such as property tax payments and registration renewals can be completed online after 12 noon Sunday at www.MyNCDMV.gov.

Weekly Highlights from the NCDOT 13 Driver License Examiners Added to DMV Staff

Hot Car Safety

As people are out enjoying summertime activities and vacation, it’s a good time to remember some important safety tips while out driving in the heat.

July is typically the most deadly month for children being left in hot cars. In North Carolina from 1990 to 2017, 33 infants and children died after being left in vehicles.

To help reduce the chances of this happening, motorists should:
• Look before locking. Get into the habit of checking the back seats before locking the vehicle and walking away;
• Leave a reminder by putting a stuffed toy or memento in the front seat that the child is seated in the back; and
• Keep keys out of children’s reach. Nearly three in 10 heatstroke deaths happen when an unattended child gains access to a vehicle.

These safety tips also apply when traveling with pets. A dog can die of heatstroke in just 15 minutes.

Additionally, drivers should check their tire pressure before hitting the road. It’s best to do this when the tires have been sitting and are cold for an accurate reading. Window shades are an inexpensive way to keep the car’s interior cooler in extreme heat in a vehicle to deter hot surfaces. Additionally, to prevent overheating, drivers should check a vehicle’s fluids and coolant on a regular basis and get it inspected by a mechanic before long trips.

Improved NCDOT and NCDMV Websites

Redesigned and reorganized websites for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles and NCDOT have launched. With the new sites, the department hopes to provide better customer service for customers wanting easier to understand information quickly.

Some new overall features include: location-based news specific to one’s area; improved search and navigation features; a mobile-friendly and modern design; and easier access to DMV online services and information.

13 Driver License Examiners Added to DMV Staff


The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will add 13 new driver license examiner graduates to seven driver license offices next week. Following graduation from DMV’s Basic Examiner Training School on Friday, July 20, the examiners will begin work at area offices on Monday, July 23.

The examiners had six weeks of intensive classroom study at the N.C. Justice Academy in Salemburg. They will take applications for learner permits, driver licenses, REAL ID and basic identification cards using modernized systems that create counterfeit-proof documents that protect against identity theft. They will also conduct road tests for new drivers.

“Every driver license examiner holds a high place of public trust,” said DMV Training Director Steve Watkins. “Great results do not come without great challenges. And we know, based on the training these graduates have received, they are ready for the tasks ahead.”

The new examiners and their duty stations are: Michael King, Cary; Marcella Spaulding, Lumberton; C. Tyler Thomasson, Sylva; Janet Hessel, Troy Barber, Desharn Leslie, Dawn Wilson, Atilla Turkoglu, Huntersville; Jennifer Montaque, Concord; Takenya Flaverney, South Wilmington; Stacey Oglesby, Nags Head; Kathrina Thompson, Monroe; and Kenneth Furr, Aberdeen.
