Planned Water Service Interruption – Thursday, June 4 – Town Mountain Road Area

The Town of Franklin will be replacing three (3) fire hydrants in the Town Mountain Area on Thursday, June 4, 2026 which will result in a water service interruption. Water service will be interrupted for several hours beginning at 8:00 a.m. until mid-to-late afternoon.


Planned Water Service Interruption – Thursday, June 4 – Town Mountain Road Area

The Town of Franklin will be replacing three (3) fire hydrants in the area of Town Mountain on Thursday, June 4, 2026. Work will begin at 8:00 a.m. and should conclude by mid-to-late afternoon.

This replacement and installation will require water service to be interrupted for several hours as they complete this task. Door hangers with a service interruption notice are being placed at homes and businesses within the impacted area beginning today, June 1, 2026 and information is being shared via town website and other media outlets.

Impacted streets include: Town Mountain Drive, Kingwood Circle, Greenbrier Street, Lion Street, Foxfire Street, Skylark Street, Starfire Street, Lamplighter Street, Ridge Street and a portion of Clyde Street. The notice includes instructions to close all taps and faucets during the service interruption and recommends filling the bathtub or large containers to allow for use during the service interruption for flushing of toilets. Following the repair, water may appear cloudy or contain small particulates and customers are asked to run water until it clears.

The Town does not anticipate having to issue a boil water advisory with this water line service, and information will be shared via website and social media as soon as service has been restored. Should you have any questions, please contact Public Works at 828-524-2516.

Overnight Sewer Line Inspections – Main Street - Beginning Monday, December 8

The Town of Franklin is working with Duke’s Services from Pittsboro, NC to inspect and clean the sewer lines under Main Street. This will require lane reductions and overnight work. Traffic control measures will be in place beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2025. There will be noise associated with the cleaning using high pressure water and suction trucks during the overnight hours. It is estimated that the work will take two days and the streets will be reopened early each morning to prevent traffic and parking impacts.

The CCTV inspection will allow for detailed examination of the sewer system’s condition and can identify areas that may need to be repaired or replaced. As the Town of Franklin is actively seeking proposals for a downtown redevelopment plan, and resurfacing by NCDOT is slated to be let for bids in late 2026, this proactive inspection will provide the Town with ample time to budget for and make any necessary improvements prior to any new surfacing.

There has been a significant water line break at the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Watauga Street which is impacting water service in East Franklin. Crews are on site to repair this line. We estimate 2 more hours for these repairs. Water service will be interrupted during the repair. A break in an aged line was the cause of the leak.

The following streets are included in the boil water advisory: Lakeside Drive, Watauga Street, Randolph Street, Dan Street, Clyde Street, Traces Place, Grandview Street, Janelle Street, Town Mountain Road, Foxfire Street, Skylark Street, Lamplighter Street, Ridge Street and Kingwood Circle.

When service is restored, there may be air in the lines causing sputtering of water when first turned on, cloudy or brown water, and potentially contain dirt or small particulates. Residents are encouraged to run water from an outside spigot or in the bathtub to eliminate air from the lines quickly.

Due to the nature of this repair, the Town is issuing a boil water advisory for when service is resumed in this area. This boil water advisory does not affect other areas in town.

Here is information related to the Boil Water Advisory: There are two levels of notices: a Boil Water Advisory and a Boil Water Notice. Here is the difference: A Boil Water Advisory is voluntarily issued when water contamination is possible. During an advisory we recommend that customers vigorously boil water for at least 1 minute before consumption or drink bottled water.

A Boil Water Notice is required by law to be issued when contamination is confirmed in the water system.

The Town of Franklin has issued a BOIL WATER ADVISORY for those impacted in East Franklin. Event that initiated the boil water advisory

A water line break that required the water system to be turned off for greater than an hour and the pipe had to be opened to the environment which could allow dirt and groundwater into the system.

What should you do during a boil water advisory?

Boil tap water vigorously for a least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or any consumption. This includes water used for dental care, making ice, food preparation, or any other consumption purposes.

It is not necessary to boil water for showering, laundry, or other non-consumptive uses. How long will the advisory last?

Water should be boiled from the time the advisory is issued and continue until The Town of Franklin officially lifts the advisory. During the time the advisory is in effect, the Public Works Department will have an outside laboratory perform an analysis to determine if the water is safe and meets all standards. The advisory will remain in effect until we receive the lab results, which should be by Tuesday afternoon.

Residents are reminded not to call 9-1-1 for this particular outage as it is being actively repaired. -End-

Town of Franklin Begins Voluntary Water Restrictions on Friday, October 6th, 2023

Voluntary Water Restrictions to begin October 6, 2023

The Town of Franklin is asking citizens to voluntarily restrict the amount of water being used effective Friday, October 6,2023. Due to the lack of rain, water levels in Cartoogechaye Creek at the inflow to the water treatment plant are below normal and this has triggered a Stage 1 voluntary water restriction.

In accordance with the Town of Franklin’s Water Shortage Response Plan (WSRP), a stage 1 voluntary water restriction means that all water users are being asked to reduce their normal water use by 5%. Examples of ways to voluntarily restrict water use can include eliminating of washing vehicles, waiting to wash clothes until you have a full load, checking for leaks or toilets that may be running or use of dishwashers, limiting watering or irrigating outdoor landscapes. The Town is asking for citizen cooperation by limiting the use of water, when possible, until there is enough precipitation to raise water levels.

Any updates related to the water restrictions will be forwarded to the media and posted on the Town’s website and the Town, Police and Fire social media pages.

1975 – A bomb explodes at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, killing 11 people and injuring 74.

1989 – Czech writer, philosopher and dissident Václav Havel is elected the first post-communist President of Czechoslovakia.

1992 – Fernando Collor de Mello, president of Brazil, tries to resign amidst corruption charges, but is then impeached.

1994 – Turkish Airlines Flight 278 (a Boeing 737-400) crashes on approach to Van Ferit Melen Airport in Van, Turkey, killing 57 of the 76 people on board.

1996 – Guatemala and leaders of Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity sign a peace accord ending a 36-year civil war.

1997 – Hong Kong begins to kill all the city's 1.25 million chickens to stop the spread of a potentially deadly influenza strain.

1998 – Leaders of the Khmer Rouge apologize for the 1970s genocide in Cambodia that claimed over one million lives.

2003 – The last known speaker of Akkala Sami dies, rendering the language extinct.

2006 – The UK settles its Anglo-American loan, post-WWII loan debt.

2012 – A Tupolev Tu-204 airliner crashes in a ditch between the airport fence and the M3 highway after overshooting a runway at Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow, Russia, killing five people and leaving three others critically injured.

2013 – A suicide bomb attack at the Volgograd-1 railway station in the southern Russian city of Volgograd kills at least 18 people and wounds 40 others.

2013 – Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher suffers a massive head injury while skiing in the French Alps.

2020 – A large explosion at the airport in the southern Yemeni city of Aden kills at least 22 people and wounds 50.
