A Mother's Plea for Help for her Daughter

Macon Media was contacted last night by Terri Morrow who said her daughter's life was in danger and she felt that law enforcement wasn't doing anything to help her and she felt she had no other alternative left to her than making a sign and holding it up on the street so others would know what was happening. She spent about three hours at the corner of Main street and Iotla Street on Saturday holding a sign that read:

  Addict/Daughter Trafficked/Beaten By: The Cuban

Macon Media asked her why she was out on the sidewalk holding a sign and what she thought she could accomplish. 

 This is her answer. 

 Terri: "I'm out here because this man is going to kill my daughter, I'm out here because the police know that he is prostituting her. 

They have admitted that to me and they have done nothing. This man has been dealing here for years." 

 Macon Media: By police you mean the police department or sheriffs department? 

 Terri: "The sheriff's department."  She added that she has spoken to the Sheriff and to another officer at the sheriff's office. She said, "I have asked them to please help." 

 She added that she didn't believe they were going to help, so this is her only alternative. If this gets her killed, then she is willing to trade her life for her daughter's life. 

 As she was leaving to go meet someone, she added, "I'm not stopping until he gets me, or they (law enforcement) gets him." 

 She posted this message to her friends on Facebook last night: 

 *Edit:* If you hear of anything happening to me after I begin this, please know it will be by him, his buyers, or his people above him. When you see me walking around town holding a poster board, say a prayer. My daughter is an addict and is being trafficked and beaten regularly by "the Cuban". All the police and addicts know who he is. Hopefully questions will start being asked and people will start talking. I'm fed up. Im not sitting on my hands while she is beaten to death. 

 Macon Media has reached out to the Sheriff earlier this afternoon and other enforcement agencies for a response and those will be posted when they are received.

OPERATION MEDICINE DROP

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Highlands Police Department and Franklin Police Department will participate in Operation Medicine Drop on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Operation Medicine Drop is a partnership of Safe Kids North Carolina, NC State Bureau of Investigation, the Riverkeepers of North Carolina, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of North Carolina and local law enforcement agencies, working together to encourage the public to safely dispose of unused and unwanted medication.

Operation Medicine Drop helps prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse while protecting our waters. Since 2010, we have collected more than 30 million dosages just during OMD events. North Carolina will hold its 4th annual Operation Medicine Drop March 17-23, 2013 to coincide with National Poison Prevention Week. On March 23^rd medications will be collected from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at two locations in Franklin, Kmart and Walmart; and two locations in Highlands, Highlands Pharmacy and Main Street Pharmacy.

Operation Medicine Drop offers the public a free and convenient option to dispose of unwanted and expired medications; it also keeps dangerous narcotics and other controlled substances from being stolen or otherwise diverted by drug abusers and drug dealers to be consumed or distributed illegally.

Sheriff Holland states: “I am asking everyone to dispose of their medications safely and properly and I encourage all residents to take advantage of this program. Please do not flush medications down the drain or dispose of them in trash that ends up in the landfill. Please help us prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse, and in keeping medications out of the hands of children.”

Subject: Observations of Phish Concert at Asheville Civic Center
Mr. Jackson,

I just left the Phish Concert at the Civic Center and wanted to share my experience there.

First, I appreciate the learning opportunity and staff support for my request to observe the event firsthand.

In a nutshell, I was impressed. It was apparent that city staff, our police, event security, the promoters, and the vast majority of those most important to a successful event, the Phish fans, were on their game.

The atmosphere was fun, safe, and managed. The arena was not overwhelmed by the smoke of cigarettes or pot and it was evident that most folks were trying to do their part and respect the facility's rules.

I understand that there were a significant number of arrests - mostly outside the facility - for drug activity. I appreciate our police officer's persistency in defining Asheville's Civic Center, public spaces, and downtown as a place you can come to have fun, but not a place you can freely sell and use drugs.

In short, the difference between this event and the Ratdog and Wide Spread Panic events of several years ago was night and day. A perfected experience with such a large group was never the goal - but tonight seemed to come pretty close.

Appreciation is due for all the hands that helped Asheville hold an event that was defined by a good time versus drug activity and indifference to the rules of the house.

Tonight, Asheville's Civic Center smelled more like City Hall than an Amsterdam hash house.

I have no idea who Phish is, outside the fact that they play at the Asheville Civic Center every year , and their fans are like Trekkies on drugs, given their obsession about the band. Bear Witness for yourself.

ASHEVILLE — A concert by rock band Phish at the Asheville Civic Center Tuesday night resulted in a spike in the number of drug arrests.

At least 13 people were arrested, and all or nearly all the charges were related to the concert, according to the Buncombe County Magistrate’s Office. Some also were charged with resisting arrest or assaulting a law enforcement officer.

The Carolina Stompers Expose Grafitti Problem in Asheville

The graffiti wouldn't scare me away, but it would cause me to make sure I had a round chambered in the .45 and the safety in the off position when doing business in the area...which includes most of Asheville now anyway.

Bush Commutes Sentences for Two Former Border Patrol Agents

Ever the stubborn "Fill in-the-blank", President Bush waited until virtually the very last minute before acting to free the political prisoners, Ramos and Compeon. He commuted instead of pardoning them to ensure that they will never be able to work in the chosen line of work again:

On his last full day in office, President Bush commuted the controversial sentences of two former Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a Mexican drug runner in 2005. 

The imprisonment of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean had sparked outcry from critics who said the men were just doing their jobs and were punished too harshly. They had been sentenced to 11- and 12-year sentences, respectively. 

Their sentences will now expire on March 20 of this year. 

Ramos and Compean were sentenced in connection with the shooting of Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, who was shot in the buttocks while trying to flee along the Texas border. He admitted smuggling several hundred pounds of marijuana on the day he was shot and pleaded guilty last year to drug charges related to two other smuggling attempts. 

Nearly the entire congressional delegation from Texas and other lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle pleaded with Bush to grant them clemency. Conservatives hailed Bush's decision Monday.

Mexico's attorney general says organized-crime slayings more than doubled this year. More than 350 people have been killed in Tijuana since the end of September. As drug cartels battle for control of the border city's key smuggling routes into the U.S. market. U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard Capture Drug-Running Semi-Submersible

PRESS RELEASE

From Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command - Commander, U.S. 4th Fleet

USS MCINERNEY, At Sea (NNS) -- Sailors from USS McInerney (FFG 8) and U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment 404 (LEDET) intercepted a self-propelled semi-submersible (SPSS) carrying seven tons of cocaine Sept. 13.

Sailors intercepted the 59-foot SPSS in a nighttime interdiction 350 miles off the coast of Guatemala, capturing four suspected narcotics smugglers from Colombia and the large cargo of cocaine before the SPSS could be scuttled.

An SPSS is capable of carrying 3-5 metric tons of cocaine and has no maritime use other than the covert transport of narcotics or other illegal goods. An SPSS is between 25-65 feet long, travel at speeds up to 13 knots, carry 4-5 crew members, and can travel up to 2,500 nautical miles without refueling. An SPSS is dangerous to capture since it is designed with valves that smugglers can use to quickly flood and sink the vessel, posing a risk to boarding teams attempting to capture it.

McInerney, homeported in Mayport, Fla., and the embarked LEDET 404 are currently deployed under operational control of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet (NAVSO/4th FLT) conducting counter illicit trafficking operations for Joint Interagency Task Force-South in the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) area of focus.

As the Naval Component Command of USSOUTHCOM, NAVSO's mission is to direct U.S. Naval Forces operating in the Caribbean, Central and South American regions and interact with partner nation navies within the maritime environment. Various operations include counter-illicit trafficking, theater security cooperation, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, military-to-military interaction and bilateral and multinational training.

Fourth Fleet is the numbered fleet assigned to NAVSO, exercising operational control of assigned forces in the SOUTHCOM area of focus.

Ducker Road Community Marches Against Drugs

“A crisis unattended will become a crisis out of control.”


These are the words of Cookie Mills, leader and founder of the DRCIC, as he addressed rally participants before the march. Four years ago, Mills called for a community meeting on Ducker Road to voice his concerns that the neighborhood where he had lived all his life was no longer safe.


“When I was a kid,” Mills said, “I used to roll tires down Ducker Road and play all day long. Then I looked up years later and there were no kids playing outside. It was because drug dealers had taken over. I was tired of complaining and decided to do something about it.”


After twenty six people surprised him by showing up for the first meeting, Mills knew he wasn’t alone; together they formed the DRCIC, with a mission to shut down the Ducker Road drug houses and make the neighborhood safe again for the children in the community. Four years later they have effectively shut down five houses operating in the open-air drug market, all within two-tenths of a mile from the house where Mills grew up.

These people are fighting against the scourge of drug dealing and the harm it causes to their community...destroying lives and taking the future potential achievements away from generations of people. I salute these people, and the courageous actions taken against an absolute evil in their community. I wish that all communities were as brave and resolute.

What Do Crack Dealers and Those Who Hire Illegal Aliens Have in Common? by Carl Mumpower

What's the difference between a crack dealer, a pimp, and a greedy businessman who hires illegal aliens? Nothing, according to Carl Mumpower, 11th District Republican candidate for Congress.

Mumpower stated Tuesday that in significant ways, businessmen who hire illegals are, in fact, doing more harm to society than some of our worst criminals. "These people take advantage of a cheap labor pool which, in turn, kills the need to motivate, train, and uplift our own citizens," commented Mumpower. "Add to that all the hidden costs to our schools, hospitals, and police departments, and the extra financial burdens leave us increasingly unable to help our own."

Widespread Panic in Georgia

ARCADE - Southern rock fans trekking to Athens to party with homegrown Widespread Panic prompted at least one police department to spread its net.

But police took just as many locals - if not more - to jail as out-of-town music fans.

Arcade police, with the help of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the state Department of Corrections, set up roadblocks in advance of a three-night Widespread Panic concert stand that started Monday in nearby Athens.

"We're out here just assuring that we don't have the same problems that some of the other venues have had," Arcade police Chief Dennis Bell said.
