Firefighters extinguished a small fire in a boiler room at Angel Medical Center in Franklin shortly after 9pm on Sunday, January 21, 2024. The fire was dispatched at 8.43pm as a fire contained in a boiler room in the hospital, which opened in September 2023.
Firefighters worked to keep the smoke away from patients, and the rest of the hospital, with ventilation fans.
Fire Departments that were called to the scene include Franklin, Mountain Valley, and Cullasaja-Gorge VFDs. More information will added to this article as it is released. Macon Media posted information on the fire as it happened on Facebook.
On Thursday January 4th at
1:39 PM crews responded to a reported structure fire at 269 Green
Street with smoke reported inside the structure. Franklin Fire and
Rescue responded and was assisted by Clarks Chapel and West Macon
Fire and Rescue departments and Macon County Fire Services. The
source of the smoke was quickly located and damage was minimal and
there were no injuries.
Clarks Chapel
Fire and Rescue responded to a fully involved structure fire on
Prentiss Bridge Road at 6:03 PM. They were assisted by Franklin and
Otto Fire and Rescue Departments and Macon County EMS. Two deceased
victims were located inside the structure. An investigation is
currently underway conducted by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office,
NC State Bureau of Investigation, and the Macon County Fire Marshal’s
Office. The names of the deceased have not been released. The
structure and two vehicles were completely destroyed.
Crews from Cullasaja Fire and Rescue
responded to a reported chimney fire at 147 Dills Knob Road at 4:42
AM on January 5th. First arriving crews found a fully
involved residential structure fire. They were assisted by Franklin
and Clarks Chapel Fire and Rescue Departments. The structure was a
total loss and there were no injuries. The Macon County Fire
Marshal’s Office is conducting an investigation.

Tragic House Fire Claims Two Lives in Macon County, North Carolina
In a devastating incident, a residential fire erupted in Macon County, North Carolina resulting in the tragic loss of two lives. The incident occurred on the south end of Macon County at/around 6 p.m. on January 5. Emergency services responded promptly to the distress call, but despite their best efforts, two individuals were found deceased.
The Clarks Chapel Fire Department, along with neighboring fire departments, swiftly responded, battling intense flames for several hours, and managed to contain and extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and the deceased individuals will be undergoing autopsies today to confirm their causes of death.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this devastating fire,” said Sheriff Brent Holbrooks. “Our dedicated firefighters worked diligently to control the blaze and provide assistance as we worked the scene. We will collaborate with the State Bureau of Investigation to thoroughly investigate the incident and ascertain the root cause.”
The names of the two individuals will not be released at this time.
MCSO will continue to provide updates on the investigation as more information becomes available.

Dry high pressure will continue over the western Carolinas and
northeast Georgia through most of the week. Temperatures will
steadily warm through the period, reaching about 15 degrees above
normal by the middle of next week. A cold front will approach from
the northwest on Thursday and cross the area Friday through Friday
night, bringing modest rain chances to the region.
Two Die in Structure Fire Saturday Morning
An early morning fire on Saturday, November 4th, claimed the lives of a mother and child at their home off Wide Horizon Drive. The following from from the Franklin Fire Department's Facebook Page (no press release was issued to this outlet):
"Early this morning, crews responded to a house fire in the Wide Horizon area of Macon County.
It is with a heavy heart that we report there were two family members that perished in the fire.
Franklin Fire Rescue will not be releasing any information out of respect for the family.
We are asking for donations for two of the survivors; a two-year-old male and an adult male with the following sizes:

A structure fire on Sugarfork Road sent a local man to the burn unit in Augusta, Georgia. Firefighters from Cullasaja, Franklin and Clarks Chapel Fire Departments responded to the scene of the fire and West Macon Firefighters stood by at the Franklin Fire Department to assist with calls while Franklin Firefighters were out of the district.
Early Voting Early voting ended Saturday. A total of 147 voted in the Franklin municipal races and 36 voted in the Highlands municipal races. Tuesday, November 7th is Election Day Voters who live within the City limits and that are registered to vote can go to the polls on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, from 6:30am-7:30pm. On Election Day, The Town of Franklin voters will go to the Town Hall to vote, and the Town of Highlands voters will go to the Highlands Civic Center to vote. There will be NO VOTING at the Macon County Courthouse on Election Day, voters must go to the bottom florr of the town hall to vote. From the Board of Elections: There have been some questions in regards to the passing of Billy Mashburn who is on the ballot. His name will remain on the ballot, and if he wins the seat, the seat will be declared vacant, and the Town Council will appoint someone to fill the seat. 1. Thunderstorm activity associated with a well-defined low-pressure system located about 850 miles east-southeast of Bermuda continues to show signs of organization, and a tropical depression may be forming. Environmental conditions are expected to be favorable for further development during the next couple of days while the system moves north-northeastward over the open Atlantic. However, conditions are forecast to become less conducive for tropical cyclone formation by the middle part of this week, when the system is expected to reach colder water and merge with a cold front.

FRANKLIN -Several local volunteer fire departments responded to an early morning structure fire on Sunset Ridge Road. A neighbor reported the fire shortly before 4:00 am and noted there were explosions occurring. (These turned out to be propane tanks).
Burningtown-Iotla Fire Department was the initial responding VFD and Franklin and Cowee Fire Departments provided mutual aid. Clarks Chapel Fire Department was called out to assist after the initial units arrived at the scene. The Command Post reported the fire knocked down at 4:37 am.
No one was known to be at home at the time of the fire and the Fire Marshall is investigating the origin of the fire.

The photos are presented in the order they were taken and some of them have been processed so firefighters and the structure can be better seen by the reader.
Franklin Fire department was called to a fully involved structure fire at 8:54 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The fire chief reported the residence was on the ground when the first apparatus arrived on scene.
Mountain Valley and Cullasaja Fire Departments provided mutual aid assistance on the call and Macon County EMS stood by in case here were injuries. The Macon County Sheriff Office provided traffic direction.
This is a preliminary report, firefighters are still on the scene. The video and photo were taken from the neighboring NP&L Loop shortly after the first fire apparatus arrived at the fire.
