Franklin Bird Club on the Greenway: July 12th and 13th Walks

From the mailbag:

The weekly Greenway walks continue

Both will begin at Salali Lane this week.  Park in the lot off Fox Ridge Rd., just south of the Flea Market on Highlands Rd. [see map at right for location]

Karen Lawrence's walk will be on Tuesday (7/12) at 8:00 am.  Check the blog for the species seen last week (total of 32):  
Bring your binoculars and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Greenway.

Paula Gorgoglione will begin her walk at 9:30 am on Wednesday (7/13).

April Fools Day: Blogger Fakes Death

A local blogger, in desperate need of attention, faked his own death yesterday. 

I won't link to his "death notices" or his eulogy because that is what he wants.

Faking your own death is terribly un-original as pranks go, and just posting a notice to your blog and facebook account is lame, and so middle school.

Psychotherapy is still an option for this person, or he could let me tutor him on the Art of the Prank.

If Conservatism Could Speak...

Mike Church asked me to prepare a talk for his national radio program. He asked me to give the speech that I would have given had I been invited to speak at CPAC on the state of conservatism in America today. My initial reaction was: Who cares what I have to say about the state of American conservatism?

I wondered, instead, what Conservatism (incarnated as a principle or an ideal) would want to say to the members of CPAC. Here is the result of my thought experiment:

Something beautiful, sad, unexpected, and miraculous happened today at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Conservatism appeared at the meeting and spoke for nearly ten minutes.

Dressed in a brilliant white gown, Conservatism blinded all of the conference attendees, panel members, celebrities, and speakers when she appeared at the main entrance in a flash of light. Conservatism made her entry right at the end of a heated panel discussion: Bipartisanship ... Why Can't We All Just Get Along?

Many CPAC members fell to their knees and begged forgiveness as Conservatism made her way to the podium. "Compassionate Conservatives" were turned into pillars of salt as she walked through the crowd. Religious bigots, who last year had made theological nitpicking the center of the presidential campaign, were struck deaf and dumb.

Conservatism stood at the podium, lifted her shining arms, and the entire building shook. This is what she said...

Commentary

I would add that at least half of those in attendance at CPAC, three-quarters of the bloggers and seven-eighths of "conservative" media outlets would be turned to pillars of salt were conservatism to speak at CPAC with the words "Conservative Principles" frozen on their lips, but never present in their hearts.

Asheville City Council Report For Dec 9th

Leslee Kulba, wordsmith of the John Locke Foundation's western blog, Wild West, has her latest notes up (via Tim Peck) on the Asheville City Council blog. You can watch the video of the meeting as you read along if you wish.

This is something I would like to see happen for all the local government bodies in western North Carolina, and am in the process of creating a type of infrastructure for those wordsmiths who don't want to go through the trouble of setting up their own blog. As soon as I can free up some time, I will be attending the monthly county commissioner meetings in Macon County, and reporting on those meetings.
