* WHAT...Damaging icing expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to two inches and ice accumulations between three quarters inch and one inch. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

* WHERE...The mountains of northeast Georgia, upstate South Carolina, and portions of southwest North Carolina.

* WHEN...From 1 PM this afternoon to 1 PM EST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Widespread power outages are likely due to the weight of the ice and snow on tree limbs and power lines. The outages could last for days in some areas. Trees and large limbs could fall on structures, posing threat to life and property. Ice and snow covered roadways will become treacherous and impassable. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Ice accumulations will rapidly increase late Saturday night into Sunday morning, possibly tapering off by Sunday evening. Treacherous road conditions and power outages will remain Sunday night and likely linger through at least Monday.

OUTLOOK

Low pressure tracking south of a cold wedge of air east of the Appalachians will bring widespread clouds and precipitation to the area into Friday. Wintry precipitation can be expected today and tonight across parts of western North Carolina and the higher elevations. This weekend, broad high pressure spreads back over the region leading to drier weather and cool temperatures.

Macon Media is under the opinion this will be mostly a rain event for most of the county, except for the higher elevations and on the Highlands Plateau, where this could be a significant icing event.
