Slime Mold teaches Japanese Scientists how to build Wireless Networks

Hey! I couldn't pass up the opportunity to use that as a headline.

Slime mold may be a pain in the home, but it turns out it can teach us how to build more effective wireless networks.

Researchers at Hokkaido University in Japan have just published the results of a study into how the mold spread. The testing was based on the idea that nature would find the most efficient way to design a network. Previous studies suggested the slime could find the quickest route through a maze.

To put the idea to a further test, the researchers used a wet surface with oat flakes placed in positions which corresponded to cities in Japan. They then placed the mold, Physarum polycephalum, in the position representing Tokyo. They also used light, which inhibits the growth of the mold, to simulate the effects of natural barriers to Japan’s railway network such as mountains.

Mr. Desloges explained that the frozen circles are actually ice pans, or surface slabs of ice that form in the center of a lake or creek, instead of along the water’s edge.
As water cools, it releases heat that turns into frazil ice – a collection of loose, needle shaped ice particles that can cluster together in an ice pan. If it accumulates enough frazil ice and the current is slow, over time, the pan can become a hanging dam – a dense, heavy piece of ice with high ridges and a low centre.
But he admits that the near-perfect circular shape of the Mississauga ice pan is very strange.
“Normally, you do not get edges of the ice pan so clean and even. It may occur when a pan forms quickly, then melts a bit before starting to refreeze,” he said. “There is the chance that these can form so perfectly, but not common at all.”

There's an update regarding the video with the African American teens shown on YouTube in the video below. This morning, I received a message from a friend named Dan who gave me the address of the school where this video was filmed.

I called and spoke to Bernard, who said he was the assistant Dean. He was very gentlemanly and when I voiced my concerns about the video, he told me that this was taken at the school last year when Obama was beginning his campaign. He assured me that they stopped this "regiment" because they felt the person who was organizing it was pushing his political agenda.

Duh.

He assured me that he didn't know it was on YouTube. I gave him the link to where to go for this video and when he found it he said, "Oh this is not good. I had no idea" I told him I'd take his word for it. He then asked me, nicely, "what's the main concern? Because I want to understand where you're coming from so that I can figure out how to handle this."

Nicely, I told him that the video looked militant. I told him about the
Colburn School video and how it resembles propaganda films from Communist dictatorships. I told him that the US military is frowned upon for going to high schools trying to recruit potential grads into joining their ranks. Why shouldn't we frown upon those who come to a school like yours to encourage kids to worship a politician? One who is not even a president.I also said that if this was done to make kids feel better about themselves, why do it in the name of Obama? Why not encourage kids to believe in the power of themselves?

He assured me that he would get to the bottom of the situation, thanked me for my call and we hung up.

Oil Falls to Six-Month Low as Refineries Escape Major Damage

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil fell to a six-month low in New York and gasoline tumbled amid signs that refineries along the Gulf of Mexico coast will soon resume operations after escaping major damage from Hurricane Ike.
Almost 20 percent of the U.S.'s oil refining capacity was shut, limiting fuel deliveries and prompting the Department of Energy to release 309,000 barrels from its strategic reserves. New York Mercantile Exchange electronic trading opened early to allow traders to respond to Ike.
``It looks like we've dodged another bullet,'' said Peter Beutel, president of energy consultant Cameron Hanover Inc. in New Canaan, Connecticut. ``The refineries in the Houston area seem to have come out of the storm remarkably intact.''
Crude oil for October delivery fell $2.07, or 2.1 percent, to $99.11 a barrel at 2:44 p.m. on the Nymex. Futures touched $98.55, the lowest since Feb. 26. Prices are up 25 percent from a year ago. Gasoline for October delivery fell 12.31 cents, or 4.4 percent, to $2.6465 a gallon in New York.
CME Group Inc., the world's biggest futures exchange, began Nymex electronic trading of energy contracts at 10 a.m. New York time today.
Oil in New York has fallen 33 percent from a record $147.27 a barrel on July 11 as high prices and slowing global economic growth reduce demand for fuels. Sales at U.S. retailers dropped in August for a second straight month and July inventories at American businesses increased the most in four years, Commerce Department reports showed last week.

All those people loading up with gas are part of the "Me! Me! Me!" America, who have no sense of thinking of the community at large. Instead of altering their schdule to fit a potential reduction of a resource, they rush to the gas stations to hoard them some fuel. Shameful.

As for me, I have stayed at home since I got home Thursday night. I note that most of my neighbors (wih the exception of you JR) have been in and out several times today.

I'll be taking note of the fuel situation in Sylva tomorrow as I make my way to WCU.

My posse and I had stopped by Wal Mart in Sylva to pick up a few things...when it became apparent that all was not as it should be...

The parking lot was nearly empty. We celebrated our good luck in avoiding the long lines and running children in the store.

Our celebration was short-lived, however...

...rumors were flying around that the supply of gasoline from the Gulf of Mexico had been shut off, and gas stations were running out of gasoline, and others were raising the prices before they ran out!!!

Here is a video I slapped together of photos and video I shot while driving back to Macon County from the madhouse that was Jackson County.


It was crazy, people were honking their horns and yelling at each other, and in a state of hysteria!

The last time I remember seeing something like this was when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and the supply of fuel was disrupted for a short time.

I am sure glad that I don't have to go out on Fridays any more...I bet tomorrow will be worse...that is unless all the idiots got teir tanks filled this evening.

So...anybody notice anything similar in their area, or was this an isolated outbreak of stupid?
