If I Had Dollar for Every Bogus Chain Email...

I've just received the Pepsi Flag Hoax Email for the ten thousandth time since 2001. Will people ever learn to stop believing this trash??? I'm posting the email complete with email addresses so the spambots can send these people even more garbage.


This email forward calls on US citizens to boycott the Pepsi Company on the grounds that they are unpatriotic and anti-Christian. It claims that a new "patriotic can" that is to be released has the Pledge of Allegiance on it but omits the words "Under God." Naturally, such a can might raise the ire of patriotic US citizens, especially those that are Christians. Many would feel so strongly about the issue that they would indeed boycott Pepsi products in protest.

However, the claim in the message is completely untrue. Pepsi has no plans for such a can, nor has it ever produced a can that features the Pledge of Allegiance, complete or abridged. It is therefore not surprising that in spite of the fact that the email has been circulating for several years, the alleged Pledge of Allegiance can has not yet made an appearance.

The Pepsi company has published the following statement on its website denying the rumour:

You've received an erroneous email about a "patriotic can" that Pepsi allegedly produced with an edited version of America's Pledge of Allegiance. The truth is, Pepsi never produced such a can. In fact, this is a hoax that has been circulating on the Internet for more than four years. A patriotic package used in 2001 by Dr Pepper (which is not a part of PepsiCo) was inappropriately linked to Pepsi.

This pointless rumour apparently arose from a similar "protest" email surrounding patriotic packaging used by another drink manufacturer, Dr Pepper. The Dr Pepper packaging featured just a few words from the Pledge of Allegiance and these words did not include "Under God". As Pepsi's statement on the issue reveals, Pepsi is in no way affiliated with Dr Pepper and it is unclear how or why Pepsi became the target of later versions of the protest email.


Moreover, it is highly improbable that Dr Pepper intended the omission of "Under God" as any kind of political or anti-Christian message. Back in 2002, Dr Pepper published the following statement clarifying the company's position on the issue...

I just heard one of the weirdest conspiracy theories of all time (and I've heard a lot of them): It holds that 9/11 was the result of a war between the CIA and the US Military...and the east coast earthquake was caused by the detonation of a nuclear device in a secret tunnel network that was an attempt to stop the CIA from transporting something from Langley, Virginia to their new secret headquarters in Denver, Colorado. Where do these people come up with this stuff? Why do they? It is useless to try to argue with these people because they seem to have no firm grasp on reality. I've always thought these people were either mentally disturbed or had a way of making money off selling merchandise related to their conspiracies to the gullible. Why Was Devin Norris Arrested By the FBI?

 I have, courtesy of David Turner, a pdf copy of the indictment against Devin Norris. If these charges are true, then I can understand why Norris has been held in solitary confinement. It would be for his own protection from the other inmates.


A Grand Jury has returned a true bill against Devin Ray Norris for the charges of:


Count One--Transportation of Child Pornography (several hundred images) dating from November 2008 in violation of 18 USC 2252 (a)(2).


Count Two--Possession of Child Pornography dating from July 2009 in violation of 18 USC 2252 (a)(4)(B).


I hope that these charges are in error and are not so. Either way, I will be praying for Devin and his family. And for the alleged victims.


This is a sad thing, and shows that we can never really know anyone, whether they are leading a double life or are hiding a dark secret. I wrestled over whether or not I should blog about this, and decided that since Devin is running for President in 2012, and he has a Blog Talk Radio Show, that he fits the definition of a public figure.


I did not know who Devin was until I saw a posting on Facebook alleging that the FBI had arrested him for having a guy on his Blog Talk Radio Show who is peddling a book that claims there is a government-run ring of pedophiles. My previous post (which is below) has more on that.


If Devin is guilty, I hope that he finds the help he needs. If he is not, then I hope that he will win his case in court and be able to seek compensation for the damage done to him due to the nature of the charges.

Commentary

I can't believe that no one has picked up the phone and called the FBI to ask about this case, and to request the records of such. There is a legal requirement for charges to be filed within a few hours of arrest, and that information is a matter of public record, and should be easy to find instead of this endless speculation I read as I tried to research this story at 4am.


After 9am (when offices start getting populated), I'll make some phone calls to see what I can find...


I hope this isn't a publicity stunt or hoax. I really despise people who do crap just to get attention. If the guy was arrested for a legitimate reason, the news should be disseminated so some of this speculative chatter can be stopped. (Of course, a lot of the chatter is from Alex Jones types...so no amount of evidence will stop them).

Mare's Tails Over West Carolina

This is just one of the many Mare's Tails I saw in the sky today.

Mare's Tails, or Fallstreaks, are formed by ice crystal falling from a cirrus cloud formation and blown away by wind that varies in speed at different altitudes, leading to some spectacular shapes in the sky.

My grandmother used to say, "Mackerel scales and mare’s tails, make lofty ships carry low sails." It meant that a storm was approaching, and in the olden days, it was a mnemonic used by sailors to aid in weather forecasting in a way that they could remember. For sailing ships, it meant that the riggers had best start bringing the sails down so they wouldn't be torn off the ship in the coming storm. And I look to the National Weather Service to see that a storm is indeed in the forecast for the weekend. Luckily, it will only be rain this time.

The Politics of Swine H1N1 Flu

First, let me note that it appears that science is taking a back seat to politics at the CDC. They've accommodated special interest groups and changed the name of the disease from Swine Flu to H1N1. This is nuts! It does not give me any extra faith in their ability to handle an infectious disease, in fact, it lessens my confidence in the CDC.

Okay, now that that rant is off my chest, let's proceed with the breakdown of the spread of the Swine H1N1 Flu of 2009.

The CDC has a You Tube Channel that has increased dramitically in populairty in the past few days, currently receiving several honors:

I have found out that the one death in the USA is not even that of an America citizen...it was a Mexican toddler who was "visiting" Texas with his family and died there.

School Closings

The CDC is also recommending closing schools for at least 14 days if one or more children test positive for Swine H1N1 Flu, and here is a portion for the interim guidelines:

• Sick people (students, faculty and staff) should stay home unless they need to seek medical care and stay away from schools regardless of whether schools and childcare facilities are operating normally or have dismissed students or closed, respectively.
• Dismissal of students in a school and closure of childcare facilities should be considered in schools with one or more laboratory-confirmed or non-subtypable influenza A case among students, faculty or staff in order to decrease the spread of illness in the community.
• Dismissal of students from schools and closure of childcare facilities should be considered for not-yet-affected schools and childcare facilities in the same area (e.g. a feeder school network or a geographic area) if more than one school or childcare facility in that area has confirmed or non-subtypable influenza A cases among their students, faculty, or staff. This would include preemptively dismissing students from schools in that area, including schools without current laboratory-confirmed cases.
• Neighboring schools to those that dismiss students should also consider preemptively dismissing students from schools without current laboratory-confirmed cases. Issues to consider include geographic proximity and extent of mixing of student populations among area schools.
• If a school dismisses students or a childcare facility closes, school or childcare-related gatherings should also be canceled. Parents and students should be encouraged to avoid congregating in large numbers outside of the school setting.

If a school dismisses students or a childcare facility closes, schools and childcare facilities should close for up to 14 days depending on the extent and severity of the illness and in close consultation with local and state public health officials (additional guidance on duration of school closures will be provided no later than May 8). This length of time is recommended because children are likely to be infectious for about 7 – 10 days after the onset of illness. Schools, in consultation with local and state public health officials, should evaluate daily the need for possible extension of the dismissal/closure based on local influenza surveillance information and the occurrence of new infections and severity of illness in the community from this virus.

Over 400 schools are reported to have closed. I guess some school districts are sharing an infected student since there are more schools closing than cases. Some school districts seem to be closing on rumors of Swine Flu being present.

Prevention

There is currently no vaccine for this particular strain of Swine Flu, but even if there were, there are enough atavistic people who would refuse to receive a vaccination to render it useless in preventing spread of the flu for fear of the one in a million chance of dying from the vaccination...even if there is a thousand times greater chance of dying from the Swine Flu itself. Perhaps this marks a return to the Dark Ages for mankind if the general population cannot distinguish the difference between a 1 in 100 or 1 in a 1,000 chance versus a 1 in a million chance. If people are going to refuse to be vaccinated, they should be prepared to be able to stay in their homes for several weeks straight, while the disease runs it's course, and burns itself out for this season.

The transmission from swine to human is believed to occur mainly in swine farms where farmers are in close contact with live pigs. The use of vaccines on swine to prevent their infection is a major method of limiting swine to human transmission. Risk factors that may contribute to swine-to-human transmission include smoking and not wearing gloves when working with sick animals.^[43]

Prevention of human to human transmission

Influenza spreads between humans through coughing or sneezing and people touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth.^[44] Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food.^[44] The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people, most commonly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days. Recommendations to prevent spread of the virus among humans include using standardinfection control against influenza. Experts agree that hand-washing can help prevent viral infections, including ordinary influenza and the swine flu virus. Social distancing is another tactic. It means staying away from other people who might be infected and can include avoiding large gatherings, spreading out a little at work, or perhaps staying home and lying low if an infection is spreading in a community. Public health and other responsible authorities have action plans which social distancing actions to request or require depending on the severity of the outbreak.

Entertaining because these people are nuts, and educational so that I can preserve their crazy talk so I can refer you to it in the future when the next hysteria arises, and I can point to this and say, "See, these people have no clue what they are talking about! There are claims that this outbreak is genetically engineered by people:

Questions about the source of the outbreak are also being asked after a public health official said that the virus was “cultured in a laboratory”.

“This strain of swine influenza that’s been cultured in a laboratoryis something that’s not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza that’s been identified,” said Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical Director (video clip here).

Was this a slip-up or an admission that this new super-strain of swine influenza was deliberatelycultured in a laboratory and released?

Allow me to debunk this story by reporting that he was referrring to the labs' culturing samples taken from people to confirm whether or not the patient had Swine Flu or not. Any normal person who graduated High School (at least 1986 and before) should know this...I have no idea if today's High School students are taught this or not.
