Ice Halo at Sunset in Franklin, NC
The Ice Halo Season has started!
The sunset over Franklin, NC last night was marked by an impressive display of a 22 degree halo reflecting off ice crystals high in the sky. On either side of the sun are Parhelia, or Sun Dogs. At the top of the 22 degree halo can be seen a faint upper tangent arc.
You can learn more about these phenomena by visiting the Ice Crystal Halo page of the Atmospheric Optics webpage.
A breathtaking halo display from Finland was shared yesterday on Space Weather.

Nocturne
I set up a camera to record this time lapse while I waited on a flyover of the International Space Station at the Cowee Mountain overlook last night...and was reminded why I don't like to get out in cold weather.
It'll have to be much warmer before I try something like that again.
