 Governor Josh Stein ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff beginning immediately until sunset Friday, July 24 in honor of 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan and Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, two Fort Bragg soldiers who died while serving on active duty in the Middle East.

A native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, 1st Lt. Feehan was killed while serving in active duty in Jordan on July 18, 2026. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Bragg. Feehan served as an Air Defense Artillery Officer and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2019. A Fayetteville, North Carolina native, Sgt. Swinton was killed while serving in active duty in Iraq on July 19, 2026. He was assigned to D Battery, 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Bragg. Swinton enlisted as an air defense early warning system operator in 2017.

He also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1993 until 1995.

Lowering U.S. & NC Flags in Honor of North Carolina Rep. Mike Clampitt

Governor Josh Stein today ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, April 4 in honor of North Carolina State House Representative Mike Clampitt, who died on Wednesday, March 18, after a long battle with cancer.

 

Before his passing, Rep. Clampitt was serving his fourth term and recently won the GOP primary to run for a fifth term in office. A native of Swain County, Rep. Clampitt represented North Carolina's 119th District including Transylvania, Jackson and Swain Counties. Services for Rep. Clampitt will be held in Cullowhee, North Carolina on April 4.

 

 

"Before I was sworn in as Governor, Representative Mike Clampitt was one of the first people I called as we worked to rebuild western NC after Hurricane Helene," said Governor Josh Stein. "He was a steadfast public servant for his community in WNC, and today I am saddened by the news of his passing. Lowering U.S. & NC Flags in Honor of Civil Rights Activist Rev. Jesse L. Jackson

Governor Josh Stein today all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff from sunrise Feb. 19 through sunset Feb. 28 in honor of Civil Rights Activist, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, who passed away on Tuesday. A protege of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, for decades he advocated for the poor and underserved communities on issues concerning voting rights, education, job opportunities, and health care.

As part of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Dr. King appointed Rev. Jackson the national director of Operation Breadbasket in the late 1960’s, an initiative designed to improve job opportunities for African Americans. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he later founded the People United to Serve Humanity, also known as PUSH, in 1971 to help improve the economic conditions of Black communities across the nation. He also established the Rainbow Coalition in 1984, an initiative that later merged and renamed as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, dedicated to advocating for social justice through voter engagement and representation.

A presidential candidate in 1984 and again in 1988, Rev. Jackson earned numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000 by former President Clinton.

Services for Rev. Jackson will be held next week in Chicago. He will lie in state at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters Feb. 26 and 26, followed by Celebration and Homegoing services Feb. 27 and 28 respectively.

"Civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson found a home at North Carolina A&T, where he launched his prolific career working to change this country for the better," said Governor Josh Stein. "To honor his life, let us continue his work for justice and equality. May his memory be a blessing."

For people across America, our flag is a reminder of our Nation’s founding principle. It stands for the sacred idea that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. Our flag is also a reminder of our shared calling: to stand for the ideals our country was founded on — democracy, freedom, and justice for all. On Flag Day and during National Flag Week, we take pride in the promise and purpose represented by our Nation’s flag.

Our country’s flag was created in 1777, when America was still a new idea. Americans flew it at their homes during the Revolutionary War as brave troops fought for our country’s independence from British rule — representing the resolve and resilience of our Nation’s 13 colonies with 13 stripes and stars. As our Nation evolved, so too did our flag — with every new star added to Old Glory, we were reminded that the work of forging a more perfect Union never ends.

Ever since, our flag has served as a source of pride and inspiration. It has flown high on many battlefields, acting as a beacon of light and purpose at home and around the globe. It flies over military cemeteries where our country’s service members have been laid to rest, reminding us of the unmoving faith they had in our Nation and the ultimate sacrifice they made. It flies over buildings, classrooms, and courthouses ‑- across small towns, in big cities, and around the world — a constant reminder that democracy begins and will be preserved in the habits and the hearts of ordinary people and that we all share a responsibility to stand up for it each and every day.

To commemorate the adoption of our flag in 1777, the Congress, by joint resolution approved on August 3, 1949, as amended (63 Stat. 492), designated June 14 of each year as “Flag Day” and requested the President issue an annual proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States on all Federal Government buildings. The Congress also requested, by joint resolution approved June 9, 1966, as amended (80 Stat. 194), that the President issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as “National Flag Week” and calling upon all citizens of the United States to display the flag during that week.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2024, as Flag Day and the week starting June 9, 2024, as National Flag Week. Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff beginning immediately until sunset on Friday, May 3 in honor of the four officers killed in the line of duty Monday in Charlotte. The officers were members of a collaborative U.S. Marshals task force of local, state and federal law enforcement officers.

Samuel "Sam" Poloche and William "Alden" Elliott were both 14-year veterans of the NC Department of Adult Correction who served in the Special Operations and Intelligence Unit. Poloche joined the unit in 2013, Elliott in 2016 after each served several years as probation/parole officers.

Officer Joshua Eyer was a six year veteran of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. A Deputy U.S. Marshal, who has not yet been publicly named, was the fourth officer killed.

The Honorable John C. Martin served the state as a Superior Court Judge for seven years and as an appellate judge for the North Carolina Court of Appeals for more than 24 years. He spent the last ten years of his career until his retirement in 2014 as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. After his retirement, Martin continued to serve on the Council of Chief Judges of the State Courts of Appeal and was inducted into their Hall of Fame for his exemplary public service.

Flags Lowered for Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix Until Wednesday at Sunset

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff immediately until sunset Wednesday, Jan. 3 in honor of Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix who died in the line of duty on Saturday, Dec. 30.

Sergeant Nix was off duty when he witnessed a crime and confronted the suspects at the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road west of Greensboro. Another off-duty Greensboro Police officer and Guilford County paramedic immediately rendered aid, but Nix later died at a local medical facility.

Sergeant Nix had served with the Greensboro Police Department since 2001.

She was also one of the first female senators to serve the state of California and the first woman to head the Senate Intelligence Committee and to serve as the Judiciary Committee's top Democrat.

Flags are to remain at half-staff until her interment, which will be announced at a later date.

Governor Orders Flags Lowered in Honor of Forsyth County Deputy Auston Smith Reudelhuber

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, September 19 in honor of Forsyth County Deputy Auston Smith Reudelhuber who died in the line of duty on Saturday, September 9.

Reudelhuber served with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office since 2021 in the field services division. He previously served as a K-9 Officer for the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, where he served more than three years. A military veteran, Reudelhuber served in the U.S. Army for six years and was also an active member of the U.S. Army Reserves.

Services for Deputy Reudelhuber will be held on September 19.
