Preliminary Election Results

Yesterday was Election Day and the TL;DR is that all local incumbents Maconians could have voted for won their races, including Congress and the state legislature. 

A record number of Maconians turned out for this mid-term election. During early voting, 8,745 (33.16%) voted and 6,718 (25.48%) voted on election day bringing the total number who voted to 15,463 (58.64%). These are preliminary results and will be finalized at the Canvass scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, November 16th.

OUTLOOK

A cold front will move east of the forecast area later this evening with drier air spreading over the region in its wake. Another moist frontal system is expected to impact the area on Thursday and Friday, with cool and dry Canadian high pressure spreading back over the southeast for the weekend.

GeoColor is a multispectral product composed of True Color (using a simulated green component) during the daytime, and an Infrared product that uses bands 7 and 13 at night. During the day, the imagery looks approximately as it would appear when viewed with human eyes from space. At night, the blue colors represent liquid water clouds such as fog and stratus, while gray to white indicate higher ice clouds, and the city lights come from a static database that was derived from the VIIRS Day Night Band.

Geocolor was developed at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) and STAR's Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology Branch (RAMMB).

12.3 µm - "Dirty" Longwave IR Window Band - 2 km resolution - Band 15 at 12.3 µm offers nearly continuous monitoring for numerous applications, though usually through a split window difference with a cleaner window channel. These differences can better estimate low-level moisture, volcanic ash, airborne dust/sand, sea surface temperature, and cloud particle size.

A debate between candidates for the NC Senate 50th District Seat is taking place tonight at 7 pm at Southwestern Community College in Sylva, NC. Jim Davis is the incumbent, elected to the seat in November 2010. Bobby Kuppers is the challenger. Both men have previously served as Macon County Commissioners.

Early Voting Begins Today

Early Voting Begins Today

Early Voting for the General Election begins today, Wednesday, October 17th. The hours will be Monday-Friday 7:00 am to 7:00pm and on Saturdays (Oct 20th, 27th, and Nov 3rd) from 8:00am to1:00pm. 

Access to the Macon County Courthouse when it is closed will be by the back door of the building, where curbside voting will also be available. If no one is at the back door, please call (828) 349-2034 and someone will be out to assist you in voting from the curb.

Macon County has two One-Stop locations. They are, as follows:

1. The Board of Elections Office Macon County Courthouse, first floor, Room 127B. The street address is 5 West Main Street, Franklin, NC 28734

2. The Highlands Civic Center located at 600 N. 4th Street, Highlands, NC 28741

Early Voting will also be available on the last Saturday, November 3rd, from  8:00am-1:00pm.

The Voter registration deadline for voting on November 6th (election day) was Friday, October 12th. However, you can still register and vote on the same day during early voting.

The last day to request an Absentee ballot by mail October 30th, 2018

Same-Day Registration in North Carolina

You can register to vote and cast a ballot at an early voting site in your county using same-day registration.

With same-day registration, you can fill out a voter registration form, show an identifying document and vote at an early voting site when it is open (not on Election Day).

The identifying document must be one of these:

• a NC driver’s license
• photo ID from a government agency
• student photo ID with a school document showing the student’s address
• or a utility bill, bank statement, payroll stub, or document from any government agency with your name and current address.

Requirements to register to vote in North Carolina

You can register to vote if:

•you are a U.S. citizen
•you have resided at your address for at least 30 days prior to the date of the election
•you are at least 18 years old or will be at the time of the next general election, or you are at least 16 years old and understand that you must be at least 18 years old on Election Day of the general election in order to vote
•you are not serving a sentence for a felony conviction (including probation or on parole). If previously convicted of a felony, citizenship and voting rights are automatically restored upon completion of the sentence. No special document is needed.

NOTICE TO VOTERS WITH NO ACCEPTABLE ID UNDER THE HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT (HAVA)

Requirements for Certain First-time Voters

Under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), individuals who have registered to vote and have not previously voted in an election and have not provided verifiable ID, must show one of the following types of ID to an election official the first time they present to vote. (NCGS § 163-166.12)

As a first-time voter, if you cannot show one of the forms of acceptable ID, then you may still vote by casting a provisional ballot. You will then need to send or bring one of the forms of ID noted above to your county board of elections no later than the close of business of the ninth day after election day in order for your ballot to count.

What is a Current Document?

To be current, the document must be the most recent version or at least dated within three (3) months of the date it is presented to an election official. Copies of acceptable documents are permissible. The original is not required. It is also permissible for a voter to present an electronic or online version of a document, as long as the document is obtained from the original source (e.g., e-Bills from utility companies, electronic bank statements, electronic earnings statement from employer, etc.) and shows his or her current name and address.

Fraternal Order of Police Host 2018 Candidate Forum

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #81 hosted a foum in the big courtroom in the Macon County Courthouse for candidates running for District Judge and for Macon County Sheriff.

Candidates seeking election as District Court Judge were Judge Kristina Earwood (incumbent) and Leo Phillips. Candidates seeking election as Sheriff were Sheriff Robert Holland (incumbent), Eric Giles and Bryan Carpenter.

Southwestern Community College Hosts Candidate Debate for the Jackson County Board of Commissioners

Last night, Southwestern Community College in Sylva hosted a debate for candidates seeking seats on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

Candidates participating were Boyce Deitz, Doug Cody, Charles Elders, Ron Mau, Brian McMahan, and Gayle Woody.

The debate was streamed live online and a recorded version is embedded below.






This was the first in a series of debates for the 2018 election season.

The second debate on Oct. 18 will host candidates for N.C. State Assembly: Rep. Mike Clampitt and Joe Sam Queen.

The third debate on Oct. 25 will host candidates for N.C. State Senate: Sen. Jim Davis and Robert Kuppers.

All of the debates will take place at 7 p.m. in the Burrell Conference Center on SCC’s Jackson Campus and are completely free and open to the public.

Video of the August 6, 2018 Candidate Forum Hosted by the Nantahala Community Development Club

The Nantahala Community Development Club hosted a candidate forum last night in the combined Nantahala Library and Nantahala Community Center located behind Nantahala School. Candidates for NC Senate District #50, Macon County Sheriff, Macon County Commissioner, and Macon County Register of Deeds participated. Dorie Leland volunteered to operate a camera for Macon Media at the event because Bobby Coggins was filming a meeting of the Franklin Town Council [LINK] that was occurring at the same time. Thank You, Dorie, for ensuring this event was covered so the voters of Macon County could see and hear exactly what took place at the forum. No other local media outlet was able to send reporters due to low staffing and they were also present at the town board meeting.

A rally in support of Scott Knibbs was held at Speaker's Corner next to the Macon County Courthouse in Franklin yesterday. Several people, including Mark Melrose, the family attorney. LOCAL ELECTION RESULTS



Incumbents Congressman Mark Meadows and County Commissioner Jim Tate won primaries yesterday. Mark Meadows will be facing Phillip G Price, who won the Democratic primary. Tate has no Democratic challenger this fall so he will be county commissioner for another four years. An article with a more detailed look at the primary results will be published later today.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT MEETINGS

Due to the rally and the primary, video of the meetings of the Franklin Town Council and Macon County Board of Commissioners will not be available until later this week. Macon Media apologies for the later than usual publication of these videos.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

I am writing to thank the residents of Franklin, Highlands, and Macon County for spreading joy to children around the world this Christmas. Through the generosity of the Macon County community, 4,636 shoeboxes were collected; and the Western North Carolina Area Team was able to exceed our goal by collecting 20,038 shoebox gifts for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The International total for 2017 was 11,012,840 shoeboxes!

As National Volunteer Week (April 15 – 21) approaches, I wanted to pass along information about an opportunity for Macon County residents to join a local volunteer team with Operation Christmas Child. This project of the international Christian relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse, sends gift-filled shoeboxes to millions of children in need each year and gives local residents the opportunity to make a worldwide impact. “National Volunteer Week is a great time to become a part of this international project,” said June Trull, who heads up the Western North Carolina Area Team of Operation Christmas Child.“Joining an Operation Christmas Child Area Team is an amazing way to give back year-round and share God’s love with children in need.”



Operation Christmas Child has delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries since 1993. This year, the local Western North Carolina Area Team hopes to collect 21,000 shoebox gifts to contribute to the 2018 global goal of reaching more than 11 million children in need.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

LOCAL NEWS 

Macon County Deputies responded to a residence near Mashburn White Road of Macon County regarding a roadway dispute between neighbors. First Deputy arrived on scene and was confronted by one of the neighbors involved in the dispute with a firearm visibly in his possession. The deputy discharged his duty weapon and the suspect is deceased. Additional deputies, first responders & Sheriff Holland arrived on scene along with investigators but as per protocol the Sheriff contacted the SBI and has requested a full investigation into the incident. The SBI has now arrived on scene as well. Additional details will be made available as soon as it is appropriate to do so. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased as well as to everyone involved in the incident especially the deputy who was protecting & serving his community tonight.

Macon County Activity Bus Catches Fire, Students Safe
(repeat for those who unplug for the weekend)

An activity bus owned by the Macon County Schools was transporting students back to Macon County yesterday afternoon when it caught fire in Haywood County on I-40 near mile marker 31. All students were safely evacuated from the bus before it was consumed by flames. An image and statement from the Macon County School Superintendent is posted below:

Earlier today, Macon County Schools Bus # 8112 was traveling back to Franklin from an Upward Bound trip. The driver of the bus heard a loud pop which appeared to be a blown tire. The driver pulled the bus safely to the shoulder of the road to begin moving students off the bus. Smoke then appeared. The smoke was quickly followed by flames. All students and the driver safely exited the bus prior to the flames. Thank you to Haywood County Schools for loaning a bus to our group so they could return to Franklin. Again, all students and our driver are safe. Thank you to everyone that has contacted our district and offered their assistance as well as checked on our students. As you know, this situation could've been much worse.

LOCAL OUTLOOK

Cool high pressure continues across our region through today. The high then moves to near Bermuda Tuesday and persists through the rest of the workweek. As a result, persistent southerly flow atop the area will bring above normal temperatures for the latter half of the week. A cold front arrives next weekend perhaps bringing some showers.
