Weather Briefing for Saturday, June 30, 2018

LOCAL OUTLOOK

High pressure will build to our north and persist into the weekend. Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase on Sunday and early next week, as a warm front lifts over the area. Temperatures are expected to climb back above normal by midweek.

Daily Weather Briefing for Wednesday, June 27, 2018

LOCAL OUTLOOK

Low-pressure will pass by to the north of the region this afternoon and evening, enhancing thunderstorm coverage for yet another day. Some showers or storms could linger tonight as an associated cold front settles into the area. Despite the front, hot weather will return to end the week, though precipitation chances will be lower.

Afternoon Thunderstorms

For a fourth day in a row, there were numerous thunderstorms in Macon County, although these were not as strong as the Saturday and Sunday storms. Area fire departments responded to calls regarding downed trees and power lines, including a lightning strike at the Oak Forest Apartments and an abandoned tractor-trailer on US-64 on Winding Stairs Gap. Small hail quarter-size and smaller fell in the county, but widespread damage was not reported. An open thread on Facebook was operated during the storms. [LINK]

More storms are expected today, tonight and possibly Thursday.

Daily Weather Briefing for Tuesday, June 26, 2018

Day Three of Strong Afternoon Thunderstorms in Macon County

Strong to severe thunderstorms moved through Macon County for the third day in a row. The impact in Macon County was not as severe as the two previous days and Jackson County was the hardest with power outages exceeding 3,000 at one point in the late afternoon with numerous trees down on lines and houses throughout the county. The peak outage number of outages in Macon County was just shy of 700 Duke Energy and 75 Haywood EMC customers after 6 pm. That number had dropped to 283 and zero, respectively, by 2:50 am when this portion of the daily briefing was prepared.  An open thread was published on Facebook on our weather page. [LINK]

A security camera captured the moment a billboard on NC-107 in Sylva was blown over as a storm moved through Jackson County yesterday afternoon.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON THREAD #2 [LINK]
SATURDAY AFTERNOON. These storms caused the most damage of the three days of storms. Scroll down to see the liveblog posted in reverse chronological order.

More storms may be possible on Wednesday and Thursday.

LOCAL OUTLOOK

More seasonable temperatures are expected today with a stalled cold front south of the area. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop. A passing trough makes showers and storms even more likely Wednesday into Thursday, with hot weather returning to end the week.

HAZARDS

Despite cooler and cloudy conditions on today due to the wedgelike airmass, enough instability is expected in the afternoon for some thunderstorms as clouds thin a bit. Any storms that form should have less intensity than yesterday; while a squall line is not likely, a couple clusters of storms along outflow boundaries is possible and some of the stronger storms may keep their intensity as they cross from east TN into NC. Strong to severe storms over the next couple of afternoons may develop. Damaging winds will be the primary threat but hail up to quarter size and localized flash flooding will also be possible. Chances are good that the regular garden variety thunderstorms are all most of us will see this afternoon. Keep an eye to the skies this afternoon and don't stray too far from shelter after 2 pm just to be on the safe side.
