Annual 4-H Plant Sales for 2021 Announced

It’s that time of year again when Macon County 4-H sells fruit and berry plants to our families and the community. Our Annual 4-H Plant Sale is going on now. Orders will continue to be taken through Friday, March 12, 2021 Pick-up will be April 7-9, 2021. All proceeds from this sale will go to Macon County 4-H. This is a fundraiser and there is not guarantee on plants. Types of plants being sold this year are; grapes, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, elderberry, and strawberry plants, apple trees, cherry trees, pear trees, and plum trees. On the website are the types of plants we are selling and an order form. Please fill out the form below and mail or bring to our office with payment. Pre-payment is necessary on all orders. If you have any questions about the 4-H Plant Sale please call our office at 349-2046.

This meeting is for existing growers, new growers, and those interested in growing hemp. Topics to be covered will include: Research, regulations and agronomics from the N.C. Call for 2019 Macon County Fair Educational Booths

Attention Organization Leaders:

County Fair time is almost here again! This year’s Macon County Fair will be held September 11th - 14th, 2019. The theme is “UP & Growin’, Let’s Get Goin’”. The Fair Association extends to you the opportunity to construct an educational booth using this theme. This is an excellent time to better acquaint the public with your organization.

Booths must be constructed on Monday, September 9th (one day only). All work on educational booths must be completed between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., on Monday, to be eligible for judging.

Extension Office to Offer Workshop on Worm Composting and Backyard Composting

North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Macon County Center will be holding a workshop on Worm Composting and Backyard Composting. Come and learn the basics of successful vermiculture (composting with earthworms) and backyard composting. Hear what to compost (and what not to) and why. You will learn how to transform food scraps, leaves, and other organic materials into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner that will benefit your lawn and gardens.

Our speaker will be Rhonda Sherman, an extension specialist in the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University. She provides leadership for university outreach programs on solid waste management issues through the Cooperative Extension Service. 

Considered a leading authority on vermicomposting, Rhonda has received requests for information from people in 112 countries. She has taught composting and vermicomposting in Guyana, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Chile, and throughout the United States. Rhonda organizes the world’s only annual conference on large‐scale commercial vermicomposting. Her 20th Annual Vermiculture Conference will this year.

Her areas of expertise are vermicomposting, composting, recycling and waste reduction. She gives about 40 presentations annually and has authored over 65 publications.

Rhonda co‐founded the North Carolina Composting Council (NCCC) and served on the Board of Directors for 10 years. In the past, she was on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Composting Council and was a contributing editor to BioCycle Journal of Composting and Organics Recycling.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, April 25 from 1 pm until 4 pm at the Macon County Cooperative Extension Center. There is no charge, but please call to register for the class. Call 828 349-2046.

Press Release: Community Garden Taking Applications

Here is a press release from the Macon County Community Garden Committee. They are now taking applications for participation in the community garden. Details are posted below.

The Macon County Community Garden Committee is now taking applications for garden space in the 2019 Community Garden. The community garden is in its’ eighth season. It has grown from sixteen to twenty four garden spaces since its’ beginning. Spaces are 500 square feet each and are tilled. Gardeners must supply their own fertilizer, seeds and plants and agree to abide by garden regulations. There is a charge of twenty five dollars per garden spot. It is requested that a portion of each gardener’s produce be donated to Macon County Care Net. In past years, the community garden has provided a substantial amount of fresh vegetables to Care Net for distribution to those in need. For an application or more information, call North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Macon Center, at 349-2046. The garden should be available for use by the first of May.
