Buncombe County Republican Party Responds to Opposition Intimidation

The Buncombe County Republican Party is receiving calls and reports on voter and volunteer intimidation by representatives of the opposition party. In addition, volunteers associated with the Democratic Party have been filmed conducting campaign activities in direct violation of poll electioneering buffer requirements. In response to these and other actions, the Buncombe Republican Party is filing a formal complaint with the Board of Elections.

Examples of violations include the following—

1. Republican volunteers at the Biltmore Square Early Voting site were told by opposition campaigners they would have to move to a church that was located “across the street” from the mall to greet voters. Our representatives refused.

2. The Vice-Chairman for the Buncombe Democratic Party instructed a Republican site campaigner to move their tent at the Tunnel Road voting site. Our representative was intimidated but refused to comply from the illegal request.

3. A voter was approached in the parking lot of a voting site and asked who he voted for – he was cursed by the individual when he acknowledged his Republican vote.

4. The Republican Party has set-up clearly marked tents at early voting sites – including the North and South Asheville libraries. Opposition party representatives have placed their tables under our tents and created confusion for voters seeking information on Republican candidates. 5. A Republican volunteer at the South Buncombe site witnessed an opposition party volunteer physically move one of the 50’ buffer signs.

6. Opposition volunteers have been repeatedly seen removing and/or destroying Republican candidate signs.

7. In another serious violation, leadership of the Buncombe County Democrat Party was filmed electioneering with indifference to the poll distance marker at the downtown Asheville early voting site. Democrat candidates Jane Whilden and Susan Fisher can specifically be seen campaigning beyond the poll distance marker. “Most of the BC Republican volunteers at the Early Voting sites are elderly or handicapped,” said Buncombe GOP Chair Chad Nesbitt. “We installed these tents for their comfort and security and to show a strong and welcoming Republican presence for voters. These are not confrontational volunteers, yet they are reporting a pattern of intimidation and misbehavior by representatives of the other party. Though Asheville’s liberal socialist progressive community seems to feel free to do whatever serves their interest, we will stand up to bullying and violations.
We are in the process of passing incident reporting forms to our volunteers and asking them to document any misbehavior by the opposition party or others seeking to intimidate voters or volunteers.
LSP’s under a Democratic Party banner would cry “foul” with a passion were conservative, Tea Party, or independents behaving inappropriately at voting sites and would be correct in doing so. Though liberal dominance of politics and some media in Buncombe County supports double standards, we will nonetheless stand firm and report their activities to appropriate authorities.
Nesbitt said, “Our Republican representatives are under strict instruction to obey all laws and to behave in a professional manner.” “We will not look away from intimidation or desperation tactics used by the opposition to maintain their dominance, but we will not reciprocate. It is our hope that this election will produce a unification of Republicans, conservative Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents intent on reestablishing balance and accountable governance in Buncombe County, our state, and country.
“At no point have poll officials raised concerns with me as Chair or our volunteers regarding our tents or volunteer behaviors,” said Nesbitt. “All complaints seem to be coming from opposition party representatives who are evidently uncomfortable with the Republican Party having a stronger than normal poll presence. It is our pleasure to disappoint them with our success and enthusiasm. We will continue to do our best to give voters the information and support they need to make informed decisions.”

Team BCGOP has produced a TV ad that we want to run on the 6:00 PM WLOS news this Saturday. This newscast will be buzzing about where Obama has been in Asheville and our ad will run right in the middle of it.

WLOS will also cover this ad as a news story which will lead right into our “Outreach Program” in the school districts.

Congratulations to the Buncombe County Republican Party for an upbeat and productive County Convention! Today, Republicans elected a new Chairman, Chad Nesbitt, who has plans for major fundraising and organizational goals.

We also elected a 1st Vice Chairman, Chris Eck, and Secretary, Miah Siemion, both of whom have been serving as interim officers up until the Convention.

Lefties are cheering the selection of Chad Nesbitt as the new chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party because they think it will be a disaster.


I think they are wrong and look forward to the rebirth of the Republican Party as a force to be reckoned with over the next year in Buncombe County. 


Chad is an accomplished businessman and has a knack for getting things going and I believe he will do an excellent job of moving the BCGOP forward and being a cheerleader for the conservative activists in the formerly beleaguered Buncombe County Republican Party.


It makes me specially happy to think of the reaction of Asheville blogger Tim Peck to this news. In the past, he has been at the forefront of people hating on Chad and his happy band of crime fighters. I think I can hear his teeth grinding all the way to Macon County.

Do Republicans in Buncombe County Understand the US Constitution??? Or Do They WANT A Religious Test for Officeholders?

**2.14pm** I've had several emails from Republicans in Buncombe County objecting to my use of the term Republican in my headline, several of whom I respect. I'm letting the descriptor stand because I feel it fits, and I know of no significant numbers of Republicans who have come out in support of Cecil Bothwell's religious freedom. If I am mistaken in this, please correct me.





I hope that certain people in Buncombe County will realize the folly of allowing themselves to be stirred up by listening to a moron on the radio regarding Cecil Bothwell. That guy has done nothing but cause trouble for Republicans, and as soon as they realize that, the better.

One of his latest efforts has succeeded in making the target briefly on the national radar (see AshVegas) while simultaneously exposing our side as hypocritical idiots who don't understand the US Constitution. (As many Republicans are want to do these days since it is the style of the times). I'll wager less than one in a hundred "Republicans" have read the US Constitution and the documents that supported it, The Federalist...also known as The Federalist Papers. Or, for that matter, the Anti-Federalist Papers written by people who opposed the Constitution, and were in favor of religious tests of office.

Here is the 3d clause of Article VI:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

That is very simple language, and should be easy to understand. The US Constitution trumps the state constitutions in this case.

Further, requiring a religious test for office violates the 1st and 14th Amendment rights of the person in question, as Torcaso v. Watkins has decided in a very similar case.

The Supreme Court ruled on this case, so it is the law of the land unless you are willing to take this all the way to the Supreme Court and get it over turned. That will not happen.

I dislike Cecil Bothwell being in the Asheville City Council. However, the voters have spoken.

If you want anyone to blame, you have no need to look past what John Jay, an author of The Federalist Papers, the first Chief Justice of the United States and the second president of the American Bible Society, said when he declared, "Providence has given our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." If you wanted a religious test, the time to apply it would have been during the election campaign...not afterward.

So blame the conservative candidates running, blame the 80% of Republicans who did not go to the polls that day, blame the party leadership in that county for not having an organized GOTV plan for Election Day that could have been adapted by the candidates running for City Council.

Maybe next time there is an election campaign going on, these people will be involved in walking the precincts, seeking voters and donations to help get someone who shares their values elected to office. If they are not doing that, then they are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Asheville 2009 Municipal Election Results and Commentary

Yesterday was an off year Municipal Election across most of the country, and here are the results of a few of the races I tracked in Buncombe County.


All data for this post was culled from the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.


Here are the details of the races available as of 5.57 am this morning:

There is no data on the state website that breaks down voter turnout by municipality, just an overall figure for all of them, so take that in mind when you look at the following figures...


17,199 ballots were cast out of 88,229 registered voters for a turnout of 19.49%. 


According to latest statistics available on the Buncombe County website, there are (as of 10-15-09) there are 64,235 registered voters in Asheville. 32,993 are Democrats, 19,127 are Unaffiliated, and 12,012 are Republican. 


Commentary


During this election cycle, the "conservative" candidates took a pledge not to raise more than $3,000 in their campaign. In fact, Carl Mumpower did not actively seek re-election by organizing a campaign effort. He attended what forums he was invited to and sent missives via email stating his positions. As far as I can tell, the other conservatives took their lead from him.


That is no way to serve the people, or to protect their interests.


I hope that, in the future, conservative candidates will run for office in Asheville with the concept firmly implanted in their skulls that they must organize a campaign that raises money, gets their message out, and gets people excited enough to volunteer for the campaign and build a real network that can feed the campaign money, more volunteers, and an effective Get out the Vote effort for early voting and on election day. 


If they want to see how to effectively do that, they can look no further than the campaigns of the three people who will be sitting in the Asheville City Council Chambers soon. I was particularly impressed with the organization that Gordon Smith and his campaign created.


I would like to thank Carl Mumpower for his years of service to Asheville during his time on the Asheville City Council. I hope he gets that rest he has been wanting.






Interesting Facts:


Gordon Smith had about 300 donors to his campaign, and Cecil Bothwell had about 550 donors and about 750 volunteers according to a video report on the WLOS website.

   Johnson's swift rise to prominence began with his election as chair of the Buncombe County Republican Party in 2008. And last month, he swept to victory in the statewide race, collecting 731 votes to Sawyer's 556 from the more than 1,600 delegates gathered in Raleigh. (The remaining delegates either supported other candidates or weren't present for the vote.)

   Bolstered by that strong endorsement, Johnson has promised a new direction: improving his party's image, reaching out to new demographic groups, and ending the factionalism that has split the GOP at both the local and state levels.

   But he clearly has his work cut out for him. In the 2008 elections, Republicans took a thrashing at all levels. And meanwhile, controversy rages over issues raised during this year's state campaign: a 1996 domestic-violence conviction in Ohio, and questions concerning the legitimacy of Johnson's claimed 2000 doctorate degree.

   Critics within the party have decried Johnson's behavior as deceptive. Shortly after news of Johnson's conviction broke, 11th Congressional District GOP Chair Stephen Duncan said he felt "like we were so deceived" because Johnson hadn't come forward earlier.

   But other party officials and activists have leaped to Johnson's defense, sometimes ferociously, saying he's brought new energy to the local GOP following a period of infighting.

   "He was like a breath of fresh air," Carolina Stompers founder Chad Nesbitt said of Johnson in a piece on the conservative activist group's Web site hailing his election. "Johnson was motivated, inspirational and brought in young, talented people to make some big changes that needed to be made."

   Both before and since Johnson's election, the clashes have been bitter, with both sides lobbing videos and blog posts and the Stompers filing a complaint with the State Board of Elections. Amid the furor, Johnson recently agreed to be interviewed by Xpress. Commentary: A Molehill of a Republican Takeover

The roots of modern Conservatism lie in the journey of Friedrich Hayek from his home in a Soviet-occupied, socialist Europe to America, where he helped mid-wife the rebirth of conservatism on this side of the Atlantic.

He, and his mentor, von Mises, preached the sermon of Free Markets to a receptive audience that had suffered so long at the hand of the Socialism of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Now, the Libertarians seem intent on destroying the true conservatism they helped in the 1940s and 1950s. The Conservatism that recognizes right off the bat that

...if no supreme ruler exists, wise to form, and potent to enforce, the moral law, there is no sanction to any contract, virtual or even actual, against the will of prevalent power. On that hypothesis, let any set of men be strong enough to set their duties at defiance, and they cease to be duties any longer. Russell Kirk, writing in "The Conservative Mind," on page 27. The current myth has it that President Ronald Reagan brought the Conservative Christians to the GOP. That is a lie told by people who either do not know history, or would have you ignorant of it. Reagan merely re-awaken a portion of the slumbering Body of Christ, to the horror of secular society, lefties, and the hedonist libertarians.

The current presidential campaign of Texas congressman Ron Paul has attracted insane 9/11 Truthers, and a ready Brigade of online hooligans who are ready to serve their Master by gaming the results of online polls. Locally, there is even a Merry Band of those who hope to forge victory with a "Hippie-Conservative" Coalition to take over the Buncombe County GOP. (It's okay...I'll wait until you stop laughing.)

Carl Milsted, the father of this laughable attempt, apparently has no clue as to what conservatism is, and is clueless, if he is serious, on how to takeover a local party full of people diametrically opposed to his core beliefs.

What Mr. Milsted does not realize is that, when threatened, Conservatives do not appease, or run away. We fight. We educate others on how to fight. We multiply, and become stronger than before...so I welcome this juvenile effort of the clueless.

They are about to suffer the coming ClueBat upside their collective heads.
