Asheville Water System Woes Continue

I for one am glad that effective control of the Asheville Water System has been transferred to authorities other than the City of Asheville. The children on the Asheville City Council have demonstrated that they cannot take care of it, nor should they be trusted with pricing authority because of their unfair plan to treat people outside the city limits differently than the people inside the city limits.

Here is the latest letter from City Councilman Carl Mumpower (spelling as is received):

Asheville Water System Compromise Proposal

Submitted to the Mayor and Council

April 3, 2009

What Are the Current Realities?

Asheville owns the Asheville City Water System.  Control, and thus realistic ownership, has been legislatively taken by local representatives and the courts have validated the right of the state to seize the city system.  The courts have validated they have the right, but not that this action is right.  The Mayor and
Asheville City Council majority are in the process of completing the surrender of a city water system currently valued at over 1 billion dollars.

Why is a Compromise Plan Appropriate?

1) Senator Nesbitt, Senator Apodaca, Representative Goforth, and Representative Fisher have legislatively wrested control of Asheville's City water system through Sullivan Acts II & III.

2) These Acts are being uniquely applied to Asheville -- if they are fair, then they should be universally applied to Weaverville to our North and
Hendersonville to our South as well as other cities across WNC and NC.

3) The only pieces of the water system in contention are a few of the lines outside of the city limits -- the remained of the system is clearly in the hands of city residents.

4) The city does not need to take action at present -- city leadership has the option of waiting until our legislators change their minds about treating Asheville unfairly or the people of Asheville change their minds and elect new legislative representation supportive of fairness.

5) City leadership is about to surrender our water assets for less than a penny on the dollar.

What is a Realistic Compromise Plan?

Plan One -- Treat Asheville like all other cities in North Carolina owing their water system and take 5, 10, or more years to implement that plan of fairness with consideration for
city tax payers carrying a double taxation burden and county residents who cannot afford draconian water rates.

Plan Two -- Remove the resoviors from the system.  Transfer ownership of the water lines and delivery system to a regional authority - encourage Weaverville, Hendersonville, Black Mountain, Waynesville, Canton and other cities to join this new regional water delivery system.  The citizens of Asheville and other cities owning their resovioirs would then be free to use this resource to help compensate for their high urban tax rates.

There are no circumstances under which a one billion dollar asset should be stolen or surrendered without public and media watchdog outcry.  The actions surrounding Asheville City owned water system are no exception.

NC Representative Buruce Goforth has introduced amendments to the Sullivan Act as follows:

GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA

SESSION 2009

H                                                                                                                                                    1

HOUSE BILL 702*

Short Title:        Amendments to the Sullivan Act.

(Local)

Sponsors:

Representatives Goforth, Whilden, and Fisher (Primary Sponsors).

Referred to:

Local Government I, if favorable, Water Resources and Infrastructure.

March 23, 2009

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO MAKE FURTHER AMENDMENTS TO THE SULLIVAN ACT, AND TO ALLOW THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE TO USE REVENUES FOR STREET AND SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH WATERLINE IMPROVEMENTS.

Whereas, the General Assembly previously adopted Chapter 399 of the 1933 Public‑Local Laws (known as the "Sullivan Act") to address the particular circumstances of the supplying of water to certain residents of Buncombe County by the City of Asheville and the charges therefor; and

Whereas, the 2005 General Assembly made further amendments to the Sullivan Act with the enactment of S.L. 2005‑139 and S.L. 2005‑140; Now, therefore,

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  The City of Asheville may use up to five percent (5%) of utility revenues for street and sidewalk improvements associated with waterline improvements.

SECTION 2.  This act makes further amendments to the Sullivan Act.

SECTION 3.  This act applies to the City of Asheville only.

SECTION 4.  This act is effective when it becomes law.

If Asheville could be trusted not to use the moneys raised from the water system for pet projects unrelated to running the water system instead of maintaining and improving it, then it would be a different story altogether.

Hugo Chavez: "Capitalism Needs to go Down"

TEHRAN, Iran – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ridiculed the G-20 summit's attempts to deal with the global financial meltdown, saying that the "values of capitalism are in crisis" and capitalism "has to end."
Speaking to Venezuelan state television late Thursday, Chavez said the United States and Britain are "the most guilty" for the financial crisis sweeping the globe because of the financial model "they've been imposing for years."
"It's impossible that capitalism can regulate the monster that is the world financial system, it's impossible," Chavez said. "Capitalism needs to go down. It has to end. And we must take a transitional road to a new model that we call socialism."
The Venezuelan leader's comments came during a trip to Iran. In recent years, Chavez and Iran's hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — both well-known for their anti-U.S. rhetoric — have boosted economic and political ties.

Sounds like the leaders of Venezuela and Iran are are lockstep with the lefties in Europe who are protesting the G20 Summit, as demonstrated in this video:

And we need to consider that even if the progressives in America bristle at being called socialist...they have certainly allied themselves with the socialists in Europe:

The Global Progressive Forum (GPF) is a common initiative of the Party of European Socialists along with its political group in the European Parliament, and the Socialists International. The GPF sprang up from the success of the first World Social Forum held in January 2001 in Porto Alegre, in Brazil. The Global Progressive Forum aims to bring together a diversity of peoples from Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, India, and Latin America to discuss and propose alternatives to the negative aspects of the current globalization process which specifically affects the developing world.
As the G-20 wraps up in London, another global forum is about to get underway in Brussels. The Global Progressive Forum (GPF) will bring together progressive politicians, trade unionists, NGOs, academics and figures from major international institutions from five continents to develop a new vision of a globalized world which benefits all of humanity not just a select few. The GPF will take place in the European Parliament and will be opened by former US President Bill Clinton.

The Global Progressive Forum will feature debates and discussions on the issues of global governance, trade, financial markets, fair labour markets, migration and climate change, all aimed at coordinating global answers to the multitude of global crises that we face.

We should be cognizant of who the real enemies of freedom and capitalism are, and it is sad that many of them have been operating within our system for decades with the express goal of bringing it down. Now, many of them have the reigns of power and the damage they will do will make FDR look like a piker...

Republican Party Rebuilding, or Applying Makeup?

I cannot go anywhere in Republican circles without hearing how the party is "rebuilding" and "returning to principles,"  including campaigns that became a parody on that meme, and others that ended up alienating Republicans.

The only changes I see are cosmetic in nature, and the proof in the pudding will be the elections coming up in 2009 and 2010, when county, district and state parties will be tested. The latest test, in NY-20, appears to indicate that the party has room for improvement, and the grass roots campaign has also failed.

Here is a regional example that Republican parties across the nation should not be repeating:

In Buncombe County, a first test will be the City Council elections. I know that these elections are supposed to be "non-partisan", but will conservatives mount a slate of candidates like the progressives have? Will there be a counter to the Moveon candidates

A strong Republican party can provide a foundation of training and experience for conservative activists in the precincts inside the city limits of Asheville just as the Democratic party of Buncombe County has in the past.

I think that it is sad that the City of Asheville is ceded to the Democratic Party. It is wrong for the Republican party to cede areas, as it allows the democratic party to build on it's lead in those areas that will come back to bite Republicans running for offices in larger districts that include those precincts.

**update 11.26am** Jack Betts has more on the importance of lefty areas in securing wins in the larger scheme of things...like my example of Asheville.

It is my contention that the retreat from the Asheville precincts (and other precincts like them state and nationwide) helped cost Nathan Ramsey his seat on the Buncombe County Commission, and prevented anyone else from joining him on that body. It also allowed Democratic candidates to pick up votes that allowed them cruise to victory in a number of other races.

I would like to see the Republican party take the offensive in gaining new voters in these areas instead of just talking about it.

As of March 28, 2009, here are the voter registration numbers for North Carolina:

DEM 2,789,062
GOP 1,946,322
LIB         4,682
UNA 1,363,048
TOT 6,103,116

And here are some current figures of voter registration for the western part of North Carolina by county:

I will try to provide periodic updates to these figures, and engage local party leaders on their efforts to increase these figures, and give them opportunities to share their philosophy on increasing the number of registered Republicans.

Suicide Bomber Vest Found In Pittsburgh

Hamas Suicide Bombers on Parade
The device was found outside 559 Southern Avenue late Thursday morning while workers from Pittsburgh Iron and Scrap Metal were picking up scrap metal. While loading materials into their truck, they noticed a device and called authorities.

The bomb squad arrived and, using the squad’s robot, police were able to get a closer look at the device.

“It had a vest,” he said. “The pipe bombs were in a series, meaning they were all linked together.”

“There was a wire coming out of it with a plunger on the end of it,” Williams said.

The bomb squad detonated one of the pipe bombs at the scene. The other three pipe bombs in the vest could not be opened and were taken to a private destination for further testing and detonation.

The clock is ticking...it is only a matter of time before a jihadi uses one of these types of devices in a public place in America.

Photo of the Day: President Obama Bows to Saudi King

Since when do American Presidents start bowing to Kings? Especially Muslim Kings?

I wonder if the lying, hypocritical lefties will be as outraged as they were when President Bush held hands with the Crown Prince?

G20: Out of Gas

The Baron at Gates of Vienna has an excellent analysis of the actions of the G20 and IMF to temporarily stave off an economic collapse and rise in inflation. I particularly like his analogy to the Firefly episode, "Out of Gas."

I wonder when, if ever, that these "leaders" will realize that they cannot help the economies of the world by standing on it's fuel line by their socialist policies that discourage economic activity in the first place.

Hamas War College Planned

It had to happen sooner or later. A terrorist group is taking a page out of the success of Western Civilization, and is planning to start a command staff college to learn how to improve their performance.

From the Jerusalem Post:

According to the officials, the school will be established in line with the lessons learned from Hamas's poor showing in Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip in January.

"Following the operation, Hamas realized that its field commanders had not been trained well enough in how to maneuver and fight against a conventional [and] well-trained military such as the IDF," explained one Israeli defense official.

Hamas, the official said, was often afraid to engage the IDF during Cast Lead, and as a result withdrew its forces from the areas in which Israel was operating.

"Hamas wants to learn how to fight against us," the official explained. "The group realizes that it needs to establish a real school to teach and train its field commanders."

All IDF field officers undergo training at the army's Staff and Command College, which is based at Glilot. The training takes place throughout their careers, until they become brigade and division commanders.

Many Hamas commanders and fighters have been trained in Iran and Lebanon. According to Jane's Defense Weekly, the group has decided to fire 50 of its senior field commanders for poor performance against the IDF in January.

I cannot help but wonder if there will be a course in following the Geneva Convention on Warcrimes or not so they could avoid booby-trapping zoos and schools with explosives like in the following video...

Silly me, these are terrorists...by their very nature, they exist to commit warcrimes!

Idiot Protestors Attack Police Trying To Save Dying Protestor

Police were braced for another day of violence in London today after officers were pelted with bottles as they tried to save a protester dying on the street.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, had collapsed at a makeshift camp set up near the Bank of England. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

Protesters are already on the march in the capital again today as the G20 summit started in earnest to agree a rescue deal for the global economy.

Police have already made their first arrests this morning after demonstrators gathered outside the Stock Exchange, threatening to disrupt the financial markets.

One man was taken away by police after a brief chase and a scuffle and a second was detained for arguing with officers.

Commentary

This sounds about par for the course for the mindless retards protesting the G20 Summit.  I have less than zero respect for the European anarchists and lefties who are in the street in the UK.

Here is a video made by the type of people who are protesting at the G20 Summit.

Be very glad our lefties are tame, and know better than to try anything like this in our streets.

April Fools Day: Blogger Fakes Death

A local blogger, in desperate need of attention, faked his own death yesterday.

I won't link to his "death notices" or his eulogy because that is what he wants.

Faking your own death is terribly un-original as pranks go, and just posting a notice to your blog and facebook account is lame, and so middle school.

Psychotherapy is still an option for this person, or he could let me tutor him on the Art of the Prank.
