Karl Gillespie has filed for County Commissioner in District II. He currently is not serving in elected office. He has been appointed to serve on the Macon County Planning Board.

Filing started at noon on December 1st and will continue until noon on December 21st.

Board of Aldermen Deny Franklin Fire Department New Position Direct Town Manager to Advertise for a New Fire Chief

The people present at the special called meeting

The Franklin Town Board met tonight in a special called meeting to discuss adding a new Assistant Chief position to the Franklin Fire Department. After a very brief discussion, the board voted 4-1 to deny the request and directed the Town manager to begin advertising for a new Fire Chief. Alderman Farrell Jamison was the lone no vote and Alderman Billy Mashburn was not at the meeting.

The entire meeting from start to finish lasted about eight minutes.



A copy of the meeting agenda is posted below and a copy of the Town of Franklin Personnel Policy will be added below that once the Town Manager emails a copy to Macon Media, which will probably be sometime in the morning.

The 2015 Franklin Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade

Franklin Police Chief David Adams leads the 2015 Christmas Parade down Main Street
Yesterday, November 29th, the Franklin Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Christmas Parade in Franklin. The route, as in recent years, ran from town hall, down Main Street, turned left on Porter Street, then left again on East Palmer Street (Back Street to us locals) and along that street until it became East Main Street and turning right to disperse on the Highlands Road.

Alice Bradley, aka Ab, and the bus drivers for the Macon County School System were the Grand Marshals of the parade.

Video and photos are posted below. The Franklin Christmas Parade is usually the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

NCDOT Offers Thanksgiving Travel Tips Click It or Ticket Runs Nov 23rd through Nov 29th

RALEIGH –As families travel over the river and through the woods for Thanksgiving celebrations, the N.C. Department of Transportation will suspend most road construction activities on major routes across the state to help make their trips a little smoother. By avoiding traffic delays, motorists can reach their destinations safely and efficiently, while cutting down on fuel consumption and costs. 

NCDOT will put on hold most construction projects along interstate, N.C. and U.S. routes from 6 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, until midnight, Sunday, November 29 with these exceptions: 

• U.S. 264 in Dare County has lane closures at five locations to replace five bridges by phased construction. Traffic will be controlled by temporary signals;
• U.S. 158 (Elizabeth Street) in Elizabeth City is reduced to one lane in each direction from Road Street to the Pasquotank River Bridge for resurfacing and construction of a new bridge;
• N.C. 11 in Hertford County is reduced to one lane with temporary signals for bridge maintenance work;
• N.C. 94 two miles south of Columbia in Tyrrell County is reduced to one lane with temporary signals for bridge maintenance work;
• Hanover Street to Campbell Street is closed with detours in New Hanover County due to a bridge replacement;
• U.S. 421/N.C. 27 in Harnett County is closed as work continues on a new pedestrian tunnel at Campbell University;
• I-40 in the Fortify work zone in Raleigh has lane closure restrictions, with travel limited to three lanes in both directions on an 8 1/2-mile stretch;
• Both inside lanes along Interstate 85 Business near Prospect Street in Randolph County are closed due to work on the median associated with a bridge replacement;
• U.S. 311 near Banner Whitehead Road in Randolph County is detoured where crews are replacing a culvert;
• Eastbound U.S. 74 in Cleveland County has a one-lane pattern just east of Sandy Run Creek bridges and a one-lane detour route along new ramps for Peachtree Road and back to U.S. 74; 
• In Haywood County, the outside lane of westbound I-40 at Exit 15 is closed due to damaged girders under the bridge; and
• U.S. 23/74 in Jackson County has lane closures in place for bridgework.

Here are some additional tips for navigating the highways safely during the holiday travel season:

• Leave early to get a head start on your drive. Travel at non-peak hours when possible.
• Stay alert. Even if work is suspended, you may encounter narrowed lanes and traffic shifts in work zones.
• Be patient and obey the posted speed limit. 
• Use alternate routes, when possible, to avoid traffic congestion.
• Stay informed. Real-time travel information is available online and over the phone by dialing 511.
• Don’t drive drowsy. Travel at times when you are normally awake, and take frequent breaks.
• Avoid distracted driving. When drivers stop focusing on the road ahead, they react more slowly to traffic conditions and are more likely to be involved in an accident.

In addition, the Thanksgiving “Click It or Ticket” campaign begins Nov. 23 and runs through Nov. 29. Law enforcement officers are stepping up patrols statewide, watching for people who aren’t buckled up, so don’t forget: Buckle up. Every seat. Every time.

While you’re traveling this Thanksgiving holiday, your job is to be a safe driver. Focus on the road, and let everything else wait until you arrive at your destination.

Franklin Driver License Office Closing for Equipment Installation November 18 Office is scheduled to re-open November 19

PRESS RELEASE
NOVEMBER 13, 2015

Raleigh – The Franklin Driver License Office, located at 16 Patton Ave., will be temporarily closed for equipment installation on Wednesday, Nov. 18. It is scheduled to re-open on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 8 a.m.

Other offices located in the region will provide service during the closure:

Andrews – 1440 Main St., (828) 321-1442

Bryson City – 2650 Governor’s Island Road, (828) 488-3684

Clyde – 290 Lee Road, (828) 627-6969

Brevard – 50 Commerce St., Unit 4, (828) 883-2070

Equipment installations are being phased in at driver license offices around the state. NCDMV is putting in new cameras, printers, flatbed scanners and customer-facing monitors at each driver license examiner’s desk to support new programming for Next Generation driver license and ID card applications. The new equipment also includes the installation of credit and debit card machines at each desk.

Canvass Day for 2015 Municipal Elections

Today, at 11:00 am, the Macon county Board of Elections Director, Debbie George, met with the Macon County Board of Elections members to determine the eligibility of provisional ballots cast in the 2015 Municipal Elections in Franklin and Highlands. There were four provisional ballots cast in the Franklin election and three of them were determined to be eligible to vote and one was determined to be an ineligible ballot due to the person still being a registered voter in another county. They also verified a hand count of the ballots in the Highlands election as it was randomly chosen by the state board of elections. The number of ballots cast matched the number counted.

Two votes were cast for Bob Scott in the Mayor's race and one each was cast for Joe Collins, Verlin Curtis and Joyce Handley. Three were votes were cast for Brandon McMahan. No provisional ballots were cast in Highlands.

2015 Veterans Day Parade in Sylva, NC

On Sunday, November 8th, a Veterans Day Parade was held in Sylva, NC. The event was hosted by the Jackson County Veterans Office. Andy Shaw Ford loaned several vehicles to transport veterans on the parade route, which ran from Mark Watson park, down Main Street, then back to Mark Watson Park via Mill Street. Structure Fire on Mack Branch Road November 7, 2015

Franklin Fire department was called to a fully involved structure fire at 8:54 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The fire chief reported the residence was on the ground when the first apparatus arrived on scene.

Mountain Valley and Cullasaja Fire Departments provided mutual aid assistance on the call and Macon County EMS stood by in case here were injuries. The Macon County Sheriff Office provided traffic direction.

This is a preliminary report, firefighters are still on the scene. The video and photo were taken from the neighboring NP&L Loop shortly after the first fire apparatus arrived at the fire.
