A high wind field will arrive by mid-morning that, combined with low relative humidity, will make outdoors burning extremely dangerous today. There is an increased danger of fires getting out of control in the region today and tonight. Please do not conduct ANY outdoor burning today. Rain chances will begin to increase in the early evening as a line of heavy rain and potential severe thuinderstorms approaches and is expected to arrive around midnight, give or take an hour or so.

...INCREASED FIRE DANGER FROM 6 AM EST TODAY THROUGH TONIGHT... 

 Although relative humidity will be higher Tuesday, temperatures will be warmer and winds will be stronger during the afternoon and early evening hours. Rain is not expected to develop soon enough to have an impact on fuel moisture during the warmest part of the day on Tuesday. So, in coordination with forestry officials an Increased Fire Danger Statement remains in effect for North Carolina and South Carolina for Tuesday. The Increased Fire Danger Statement was expanded into northeast Georgia to account for dry and windy conditions.

N.C. Forest Service Urging Diligence, Best Practices and Common Sense When Burning Outdoors

RALEIGH – March signals the beginning of spring wildfire season in North Carolina, and the N.C. Forest Service is urging residents to be diligent about using best practices and common sense with all outdoor fires, especially yard debris burns.

Western North Carolina counties dealing with significant storm debris from Hurricane Helene are especially vulnerable to wildfires due to increased fuel loading from downed timber.

“We reduce our wildfire risk by working together,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “When it comes to wildfire response this time of year, the N.C. Forest Service is at the ready, prepositioning resources as needed. We need you to be prepared and ready for wildfire. Understand that you’re not powerless when it comes to wildfire prevention and risk reduction. Everyone has a role to play, starting with making good decisions and planning ahead if you intend to start a fire.”

Escaped yard debris burns, often due to carelessness, continue to be the leading cause of wildfires across the state, accounting for nearly half of all wildfires in North Carolina. In general, human activity is responsible for 99% of wildfires, and spring weather tends to draw people outdoors to work in their yards with many choosing to burn as a method to dispose of leaves, limbs and other yard debris.

“Careless behaviors, such as burning on the wrong day, leaving a fire unattended, not staying with a fire until it is fully extinguished, can result in a fire escaping and becoming a dangerous wildfire that quickly threatens lives and property,” said N.C. Forest Service Assistant Commissioner and State Forester Greg Hicks. “Your N.C. Forest Service county ranger is a great resource for recommending best practices and guidance about when, where and how to burn safely outdoors.”

Before starting an outdoor fire, contact your local NCFS county ranger’s office. The N.C. Forest Service also offers the following tips:

• Check local burning laws. Some communities allow burning only during specified hours. Others forbid it entirely.
• Make sure you have a valid permit. You can obtain a burn permit at any N.C. Forest Service office or authorized permitting agent, or online at www.ncforestservice.gov/burnpermit.
• Keep an eye on the weather. Don’t burn on dry, windy days.
• Local fire officials can recommend a safe way to burn debris. Don’t pile vegetation on the ground. Instead, place it in a cleared area and contain it in a screened receptacle away from overhead branches and wires.
• Be sure you are fully prepared before burning. To control the fire, you will need a hose, bucket, steel rake and a shovel for tossing dirt on the fire. Keep a phone nearby, too.
• Never use kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel or other flammable liquids to speed up debris burning.
• Stay with your fire until it is completely out.
• These same tips apply to campfires and grills as well. Douse burning charcoal briquettes or campfires thoroughly with water. Drown all embers, not just the red ones. When soaked, stir the coals and soak them again. Make sure everything is wet and that embers are cold to the touch. If you do not have water, mix enough dirt or sand with the embers to extinguish the fire, being careful not to bury the fire. Never dump hot ashes or coals into a wooded area.

A strong low pressure system will lift out of the Great Plains on Tuesday and pass to our north on Wednesday. This system will push a robust cold front through our area Wednesday morning. In the front`s wake, very gusty winds will spread over the region and likely persist well into Thursday. If the current forecast trends continue, a Wind Advisory and/or a High Wind Warning may be needed for our forecast area.

Another very dry day is expected today, with minimum relative humidity of 15 to 20 percent during the afternoon. While winds will be much weaker and temperatures much cooler, dry vegetation due to lack of recent rainfall combined with the dry air will once again enhance the wildfire danger across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia. Multiple wildfires are ongoing across the area, and the South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a burn ban for the entire state. Outdoor burning is also strongly discouraged across the remainder of the area.

.A dry cold front crosses the area Saturday with very gusty and shifting winds. Low relative humidity values remain across the area as well. The combination of these factors may lead to dangerous fire weather conditions.

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING FOR WIND AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR NORTHEAST GEORGIA AND THE WESTERN CAROLINAS...

* TIMING...From Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

* WINDS...Southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph during the morning the shifting to the northwest during the afternoon.

* HUMIDITY...20 to 25 percent in the mountain valleys up to 35 percent on the ridge tops. 15 to 25 percent elsewhere.

* IMPACTS...Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
