NIE--Attempted Coup Against USA?
The evidence continues to mount that this NIE was a work of fiction. Critics from across the political spectrum have voiced skepticism about its conclusions and its methodology; European allies doubt its accuracy, the International Atomic Energy Agency (which normally "sides" with Iran) has raised serious objections. The only parties that seem to trumpet the NIE report are Iran, Russia, and China-our foes.

Jan Davis Selected As New Asheville Vice Mayor
Jan Davis is Asheville’s new vice mayor following an organizational meeting today by City Council. The meeting also saw the swearing in of Bill Russell and a formal farewell to two-year termer Bryan Freeborn.
The rush to nominate and unanimous support of Davis in his new role led Mayor Terry Bellamy to remark, “I think it speaks very well when so many people want to nominate you.”

Fire and Ice--Journalists Can't Decide
I am old enough to remember the last climate change scare. I was in elementary school and one of our Lefty Teachers was warning us of the impending Ice Age that would put us under snow six months out of the year. Some of us were very excited, because of all the snow days we would get. I still remember the winter of 1980/81,there was a six week period where we got in maybe 9 days of school (counting the two weeks off for Christmas) because of snow and ice. We would typically get in a day or two, or a half day before a new storm would force us to go home for the next two or three days, then repeat the cycle all over again. Once, a storm caught everyone unprepared, and buses couldn't run, and those whose parents couldn't come get them would have to spend the night in the gymnasium. Unfortunately, my mom had a Chevy Blazer, and she got me and my little brother, and took us home...so we didn't get to camp out at school.
That was the last good winter, except for 1993, but I was an adult on the local fire department, so I couldn't enjoy the chaos and do cool stuff in the snow.
I can remember being told by my science teachers in middle school of the dangers of global warming. Crap, no more snow!
Why all the anecdotal stories? To provide a personal background for this from the Business & Media Institute:
It was five years before the turn of the century and major media were warning of disastrous climate change. Page six of The New York Times was headlined with the serious concerns of “geologists.” Only the president at the time wasn’t Bill Clinton; it was Grover Cleveland. And the Times wasn’t warning about global warming – it was telling readers the looming dangers of a new ice age.
The year was 1895, and it was just one of four different time periods in the last 100 years when major print media predicted an impending climate crisis. Each prediction carried its own elements of doom, saying Canada could be “wiped out” or lower crop yields would mean “billions will die.”
Just as the weather has changed over time, so has the reporting – blowing hot or cold with short-term changes in temperature.
Following the ice age threats from the late 1800s, fears of an imminent and icy catastrophe were compounded in the 1920s by Arctic explorer Donald MacMillan and an obsession with the news of his polar expedition. As the Times put it on Feb. 24, 1895, “Geologists Think the World May Be Frozen Up Again.”
Those concerns lasted well into the late 1920s. But when the earth’s surface warmed less than half a degree, newspapers and magazines responded with stories about the new threat. Once again the Times was out in front, cautioning “the earth is steadily growing warmer.”
After a while, that second phase of climate cautions began to fade. By 1954, Fortune magazine was warming to another cooling trend and ran an article titled “Climate – the Heat May Be Off.” As the United States and the old Soviet Union faced off, the media joined them with reports of a more dangerous Cold War of Man vs. Nature.

I almost never pass up an opportunity to mock the Global Warming Freaks, and I have noticed in the past year, some of them have started to change their language from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change." I'm guessing with the recent news of changes in solar activity (2003 Jaworowski) (2007 Al Fin), they are keeping their options open so they can gear up to preach on "The Impending Ice Age." I wonder if they'll try to claim that pollution is the cause of this one, too.
Of course, most of the people who try to hype Global Warming are using that as a lever to gain power, the power to control every thing you do. These watermelon enviro-whackos want to use the whole debate to redistribute wealth from the capable to the incapable (economically speaking, that is) so that everyone is on a level playing field, which reminds of a quote form HL Mencken:

John Batchelor Show Update
I keep getting hits from Search Engines where people are looking to see what is up with the John Batchelor Show, so I will do an update to make your search easier. (And perhaps get around to putting him back on my sidebar of radio shows...I STILL have Drudge listed, and he has been off the air for a couple of months!)
He is currently on the radio on Sunday nights, from 7pm to 10pm on WABC-770AM out of New York City. [WABC Streaming Page]
The tightwads don't have a podcast service so those of us who live in dial-up land can download the show to listen later.
After that show, he is on KFI-640AM out of Los Angeles from 7pm to 10pm Western Time (10pm to 1am for Rio Lindans in the Eastern Time Zone).

BY now, you have heard of the killings in Colorado that were stopped by one person with a firearm.
It is my personal policy to carry at least one firearm with me everywhere, even where posted, but not where metal detectors are used (I carry ceramic throwing knives in those situations).

More photos of the Luminaries and Lights in Dillsboro
I hope no one noticed I misspelled "luminaries" last night. Ooops!
Anyhow, the luminaries is based on the Scandinavian custom of lighting the way for the Christ Child during the Christmas Season, and it has been part of the Dillsboro Christmas Season for over a decade now.
I took 337 photos and videos last night, and whittled down my photos to 82 that I wanted to share, and then found out that photobucket limits the number of photos in a slide show, so I will be putting them on You Tube sometime Monday morning after I get to the office.
So, for now, here is what I could get uploaded while I was at the library this afternoon:

West Carolina Report 3.1
I have upgraded West Carolina Report with the addition of story snippets, and I am testing the use of Google Reader's "Share" feature that allows users to publish things they find interesting to a public page, and I have embedded a widget that will allow readers access to that page.
The big improvement, for me, is that I don't have to copy and paste so many times to bring attention to news stories or blog entries as I find them...I just click the share button to include it on the public page.
I am also putting the final touches on the code that will allow independent reporters to contribute content to West Carolina Report without having to go through me. I am looking for local or state oriented features, but will consider material for the National and World War IV pages, or other pages that will be established in the future.
And I have secured the means to go live at any time with videocasting, and may be simulcasting several shows on that website in the near future of a local and regional flavor.
The future for conservative and classical libertarians is looking very bright for western North Carolina, and the WCR News Network will be broadcasting the Revolution Live!
I am very excited, and have been working toward this moment for two and a half years, and can see everything coming together in the next twelve months.

In what will come as a shock to Ohio taxpayers, Robin Weirauch, the Democrat candidate for Ohio's Fifth Congressional District, was caught red-handed supporting legislation that would provide taxpayer-funded government benefits to illegal immigrants.

3 Mitt Romney 12%
4 Fred Thompson 11%
5 John McCain 11%

Huckabee sure has surged in the past few weeks hasn't he? And what is up with Ron Paul? If he makes the 15% mark...I'll be seriously concerned, because then he would be in a position to pick up some of the supporters of the other candidates (especially if they distrust the current leaders of the pack) as they drop out.

Aren't they now obligated to let, say, Edwards give an entire speech, LIVE?
Or, maybe Obama?
Or, just to be fair, McCain?
See, this is how we should be able to bring these "news" networks down, by busting them on this kind of thing.
To carry a candidate's speech, in its entirety, LIVE on their networks, is an extremely valuable in-kind donation to that candidate. Just think if he had to buy that airtime.
How much is this worth in dollars? It should be pretty easy to figure out.

I'm guessing this person is your standard issue progressive, who has no idea about what is news worthy...and would go through any mental contortion to shut up the opposition. I suggest you read the comments, as there are some of the Kos Kidz with some sense. I couldn't resist highlighting this idiot, and preserving their "outrage," which they express oh so well with ALL CAPS.
One last parting shot...notice how this parallels with the actions of the leader of the North Carolina Democrat Party, Jerry Meeks, to the Carolina Stomper video of Elaine Lite dancing with pagans in downtown Asheville...by trying to punish the messenger...not the message.
These people are morally bankrupt, and cannot compete with us in the marketplace of ideas.

At first blush...I think he hit it out of the ballpark. He said what he needed to say, and was very Presidential in his delivery.
