Facebook is Down, Here are Alternate Macon Media Links

Updates will be posted here in reverse chronological order:

• Understanding How Facebook Disappeared from the Internet [Cloudflare]

• Update about the October 4th outage [Facebook]

**3:18pm**

Brian Krebs has an article on what we know about the Facebook, Instagram, and What's App outages at Krebs on Security.

Here is a short excerpt with the meat of the reason for those who can't follow the above link to the article:

Doug Madory is director of internet analysis at Kentik, a San Francisco-based network monitoring company. Madory said at approximately 11:39 a.m. ET today (15:39 UTC), someone at Facebook caused an update to be made to the company’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) records. BGP is a mechanism by which Internet service providers of the world share information about which providers are responsible for routing Internet traffic to which specific groups of Internet addresses.

In simpler terms, sometime this morning Facebook took away the map telling the world’s computers how to find its various online properties. As a result, when one types Facebook.com into a web browser, the browser has no idea where to find Facebook.com, and so returns an error page.

In addition to stranding billions of users, the Facebook outage also has stranded its employees from communicating with one another using their internal Facebook tools. That’s because Facebook’s email and tools are all managed in house and via the same domains that are now stranded.

“Not only are Facebook’s services and apps down for the public, its internal tools and communications platforms, including Workplace, are out as well,” New York Times tech reporter Ryan Mac tweeted. “No one can do any work. Several people I’ve talked to said this is the equivalent of a ‘snow day’ at the company.”

**3:07pm**

Netblocks has a good article about the outage, which has been ongoing for almost three and a half hours at this point.

"Why are Facebook’s services down?

Network metrics indicate a loss of connectivity on autonomous network AS32934. The most visible impact of this is the loss of authoritative DNS resolvers, which prevents the company’s public services from functioning. It is likely that non-public facing Facebook services have been similarly impacted.

The root cause of the incident in not yet fully established, although there are indications that BGP routes have been withdrawn or hijacked, causing a knock-on impact to DNS and other servers needed to resolve the services.

Facebook has experienced international outages previously, including major partial outage incidents on 14 April 2019 and 14 March 2019. However, the current incident is the most severe Facebook outage on record."

**2:52pm** Here is a tweet from Jared Naud:

"My suspicion with the Facebook outage is that a BGP announcement got borked, took out core / internal services that then cascaded. This would make sense since their authoritative DNS servers are not reachable. FB infra team says they are trying to get to DC routers for updates."

**1:30pm** Brian Krebs of Krebs on Security says the DBS Records that tell systems how to find Facebbok and Instagram were withdrawn from the global routing tables. Here is the tweet: See https://twitter.com/briankrebs/status/1445077617426718725 to read the thread.
