Photo of a cloud undergoing convection (warm air is rising in the cloud) as seen from downtown Franklin, NC this afternoon.
Convection has started this afternoon and scattered to numerous thunderstorms will be developing across the county again today. Not every place will see storms, but those that do should be aware that briefly damaging winds, small and frequent cloud to ground lightning are possible.
AFTERNOON OUTLOOK
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop. Skies will be partly sunny, with highs in the mid-80s. Winds out of the west 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
NWS HAZARDOUS OUTLOOK
Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop once again across the area this afternoon into the evening. A few of the storms should produce brief severe weather in the form of damaging wind gusts and hail to the size of quarters. In addition, slow movement of the storms could result in locally excessive rainfall and flash flooding, especially in locations that have received heavy rainfall since Tuesday. Otherwise, dangerous cloud to ground lightning can occur with any thunderstorm.
