Wind Advisory Issued for Macon County


The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Macon County today. Winds are expected to be in the 20-30 mph range and could gust to 50 mph, especially at the higher elevations.

The advisory is posted below.

...VERY WINDY CONDITIONS EXPECTED OVER THE SOUTHWEST MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA THE REST OF THE DAY...

.As the remnants of Harvey move through Tennessee today, southerly winds will increase across the southern Appalachians. Very windy conditions will develop especially across the southwest mountains of western North Carolina. The strongest wind gusts will be over the higher ridges, but showers and thunderstorms could mix stronger winds into the lower valleys at times as well.

...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EDT THIS EVENING...

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Wind Advisory, which is in effect until 6 PM EDT this evening.

* LOCATIONS...The southwest mountains of western North Carolina.

* HAZARDS...Very windy conditions.

* TIMING...Gusty winds developing this morning will continue through the afternoon hours before gradually diminishing tonight.

* WINDS...South 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph at times.
The highest wind gusts will impact elevations above 3500 feet, but strong winds could mix down into the lower valleys in any showers or thunderstorms.

* IMPACTS...Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
