Winter Weather Advisory
URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
439 AM EST Tue Jan 16 2018

...LIGHT SNOW EXPECTED ACROSS PARTS OF THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT...

.A fast moving cold front is expected to approach from the west today and move across the region tonight. A band of light precipitation will accompany the front as it passes. Temperatures will fall off quickly with the front. Although the precipitation may begin as a brief period of rain, it should quickly mix with and change to light snow. Although the amount of snow will be light, generally on the order of 1-2 inches over the mountains and and inch or so east of the Blue Ridge, the cold temperatures may allow the snow to stick to untreated roads, resulting in numerous travel problems on untreated roads early Wednesday, including the morning rush hour. The snow should end by midday Wednesday.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Light snow expected. Plan on slippery road conditions. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches are expected.

* WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia and western North Carolina.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 7 AM EST Wednesday. Most of the snow will taper off by around midnight. Thereafter, widespread black ice will develop on untreated roadways.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times, mainly this evening. Cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

Please report snow and ice accumulations by calling the National Weather Service toll free at...1...800...2 6 7...8 1 0 1. Leave a message with your observation and the specific location where it occurred. You can also post your report to National Weather Service Greenville Spartanburg Facebook or tweet your report using hashtag nwsgsp.

THREE DAY OUTLOOK

TODAY Snow on the Ridges and Rain in the Valleys

If conditions warrant, an update to the forecast may be issued this afternoon.

Lower Elevations/Franklin/Otto area

Increasing clouds. Winds 3 to 5 mph out of the southwest, shifting to come out of the west by 6 pm. Highs will be around 40 today with very light rain expected between noonish and 8 pm. Temperatures will drop below freezing around 6 pm. Snow showers are possible in the late afternoon. 50% chance of precipitation. Rain, sleet, and snow are possible today, with a wintry mix possible in the late afternoon. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected with a similar amount of snow expected.

Higher Elevations/ Highlands/Scaly Mountain

Increasing clouds. Highs may briefly rise above freezing between noon and 3 pm. Winds 5 to 15 mph from the southwest, gusting into the 20 to 25 mph range. 30% chance of snow with less than half an inch of accumulation expected. Snow may start around 3 pm, earlier in the western part of the county and later on the Highlands Plateau.

TONIGHT Your Mileage May Vary

Lower Elevations/Franklin/Otto area

Cloudy with lows dropping into the mid-teens. Winds 5 to 10 mph out of the west around 6 pm, then shifting to come out of the northwest by 8 pm. 40% chance of snow with a highly variable accumulation from one section of the county to the next. Most locations should receive less than an inch. If a deformation band crosses the county, we could see as much as two inches in some locations in the lower elevations. I am expecting areas east of Macon County to get more snow than we do.

Higher Elevations/ Highlands/Scaly Mountain

Cloudy with lows near the single digits in the western section and near the mid-teens in the Highlands Plateau. Winds 10 to 15 mph out of the northwest, gusting into the 25 mph range. 40% chance of snow with accumulations around an inch in the western section with half an inch or so on the Highlands Plateau. If a deformation band crosses the county, these totals could be as high as two or three inches. The winds may keep the snow from being able to accumulate if the snowfall rates are low.

WEDNESDAY Windy Conditions + Cold Wave = Dangerous Wind Chills

Mostly sunny with highs ranging from the mid-teens at the higher elevations to the mid-20s in the lower elevations. Winds 10 to 15 mph out of the northwest, gusting into the 25 mph range at times. Wind chill values will start out near zero in the morning and be in the single digits at the higher elevations and the teens in the lower elevations. There may be lingering snow flurries. No additional accumulation expected.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Mostly clear with lows ranging from the low single digits at the higher elevations to around 10 in the lower elevations. Wind chills will range from 5 below zero to near zero. Winds 10 to 15 mph out of the northwest.

THURSDAY Windy Conditions and a Cold Wave

Wind chills will be below zero at the higher elevations in the morning to the single digits in the lower elevations. Sunny with highs ranging from the lower 30s at the higher elevations to the upper 30s in the lower elevations. Wind chills in the afternoon will range from the mid-20s at the higher elevations to below freezing in the lower elevations.

THURSDAY NIGHT Cold Wave Ends

Mostly clear with lows ranging from the teens at the higher elevations to around 20 in the lower elevations.

HAZARDS

Hazardous weather is not expected for most of the day across most of the county. The sections of the county that remains below freezing may see some snow showers that could lead to a light dusting of snow in the afternoon. Precipitation will turn to all snow for all sections after 6 pm. I am expecting most locations will not see more than an inch of snow overnight. It is possible that a band of heavier snow could cross the county. If it does, we could see 2 or 3 inches. We most likely will not.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook regarding the potential for a winter weather event on Wednesday. I note they're no longer talking about the cold wave. It is posted below for your convenience:

NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook

..WEDNESDAY...Winter weather possible. A band of light snow is expected to cross the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia Tuesday night and exit to the east by around midday Wednesday. Accumulations should be very light, generally a trace to up to an inch, highest across the North Carolina Piedmont. Even though snow amounts should be light, roads may be cold enough for snow to stick and cause slick conditions.
