A Lunar Eclipse, Cloudy Skies, and Hazardous Weather



Here is an updated Hazardous Weather Outlook for today and tomorrow with information on the lunar eclipse below it. [Download Full Resolution Graphic]

Today and Tonight

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms can be expected again this afternoon and evening. Activity will develop across the mountains early this afternoon, tracking eastward across the rest of the forecast area late this afternoon into this evening. The main impact will be cloud-to-ground lightning and brief heavy downpours.

Monday

A cold front will track across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia on Monday leading to scattered to numerous thunderstorms. A few of these storms could become strong to severe with the main potential impacts being damaging wind gusts and large hail.

Will I be able to see the eclipse in Macon County?

It depends. The forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies overnight, and there may be rain at some point during the eclipse, but it should be over before it starts. If it does remain cloudy or rains, here are some alternatives to watch the eclipse:

9:32 pm EDT.....Eclipse Starts (moon enters shadow)
10:27 pm EDT...Partial Starts
11:29 pm EDT...Total Starts
12:11 am EDT...Maximum Eclipse (the moon is deepest into the shadow)
12:53 am EDT...Total Ends
1:55 am EDT.....Partial Ends
2:50 am EDT.....Eclipse Ends (moon leaves shadow)

When will the next Lunar Eclipse happen?

On the morning of Tuesday, November 8, 2022. It will set during the total phase, so it will be a spectacular opportunity for photography and video since it will fall below the horizon during the total phase!!!

When will the nest total solar eclipse be visible from Franklin?

On Monday, April 8, 2024. The sun will be 84% blocked by the moon.
