A cold front will settle southeast into the region and become stationary over the weekend. Waves of low pressure will then ride east along the front Monday through Tuesday, continuing the chance of locally heavy rainfall. Drier air will mix in from the northeast by the middle of next week.

THREE DAY OUTLOOK



TODAY numerous showers and thunderstorms expected

Patchy fog in the morning. Mostly cloudy with highs in the mid-80s for the Franklin and Otto areas and ranging from the mid-70s to near 80 in Nantahala, Highlands and higher elevations. Calm winds in the the morning, then from the west in the afternoon. Rain chances will increase through the day, peaking in the later afternoon around 60 to 80% as scattered showers and thunderstorms form in a hit or miss summer pattern. Rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch expected, with more possible in locations that are hit by thunderstorms.


TONIGHT

Mostly cloudy with lows in the 60s and calm winds. Chance of showers and thunderstorms diminishing from 30% at 6 pm to 10% by 6 am.




SUNDAY

Partly sunny with highs ranging from the mid-80s in the Franklin area to the mid to upper 70s in the higher elevations. Winds will be variable and light.

Mostly cloudy with lows in the 60s and calm winds.

Mostly cloudy with highs in the low-70s and low-80s according to elevation.

HAZARDS

Numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop again today and tonight across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia. Very heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding will once again be the primary threat, especially in locations that saw heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, and in any locations repeatedly affected by thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Otherwise, expect cloud-to-ground lightning and locally heavy rainfall with any of the thunderstorms. A few thunderstorms may also be accompanied by gusty winds.

For the North Atlantic...The Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad area of low pressure located about 250 miles east-northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands have changed little in organization since this morning. Environmental conditions are expected to become a little more conducive for development during the next day or two, and this system could become a tropical depression over the weekend. The low is forecast to move generally northwestward through the weekend and is likely to turn northeastward away from the United States early next week.

* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...60 percent.
