Daily Weather Briefing for Wednesday, August 16, 2017





LOCAL NEWS

A power pole toppled over in the lower parking lot of the First United Methodist Church on Harrison Avenue shortly after 8 pm last night, bringing three others down with it and sparking a grass fire at the church. The landscaping burned, but the church was undamaged. Franklin Police closed the section of Harrison Avenue from Main Street to Church Street while firefighters and Duke crews did their work. Firefighters monitored the fire until Duke Energy could respond and cut power to the lines that sparked the fire. Below is a short video montage shot at the scene.




LOCAL OUTLOOK

High pressure is expected over the next few days leading to hotter conditions and below normal chances for convection. Humid and unsettled weather gradually returns late in the week and into the weekend. Some drying is favored into Sunday with a return to moist conditions to start the new work week.

Highs Franklin area in the upper 70s to low 80s. Nantahala, Highlands and higher elevation will be in the 70s. Skies partly to mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon are likely. Coverage will be in a hit or miss summer pattern. Some places will be clear during totality and others will not.

The tropics are beginning to get busy, but I believe that none of these storms will impact our weather pattern for the solar eclipse.

Hurricane GERT will parallel the east coast and poses no danger to the mainland of the United States.

For the North Atlantic...The Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Hurricane Gert, located a few hundred miles west-northwest of Bermuda.

1. A broad area of low pressure located about 1000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is producing disorganized showers and a few thunderstorms. This system is moving westward at 15 to 20 mph, and it is expected to cross into the Caribbean Sea on Friday. Environmental conditions are expected to be marginally conducive for slow development of this system during the next few days.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...20 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent.

2. Showers and thunderstorms continue to show some signs of organization in association with an area of low pressure located about 600 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands. Gradual development of this system is possible before upper-level winds become less conducive for development by the weekend. This system is expected to move west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph during the next several days.

* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent.

3. A tropical wave near the west coast of Africa is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this wave while it moves westward to west-northwestward at about 15 mph during the next several days.

* Formation chance through 5 days...low...30 percent.
