OUTLOOK

A warm and humid ridge of high pressure will continue to build over the region today, with another round of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms expected. A weak back door cold front will arrive tonight and set up a moist wedge-like pattern through at least midweek. Unsettled weather will continue through the end of the week, as another cold front approaches from the northwest.

Macon County Deputy and Wife Die in Automobile Accident in Georgia

The Sheriff announced on Facebook that Deputy David Head and his wife, Dawn, were killed in an accident in Mountain City, Georgia Saturday afternoon. [LINK]

Two people were killed and three were injured in an accident involving five vehicles on Saturday, according to Georgia State Patrol. The accident occurred near the intersection of Highway 441 and Old Highway 441 in Clayton. [WEB]  [FB]

Partly sunny. Areas of fog this morning. A chance of showers and thunderstorms this morning, then showers and thunderstorms likely this afternoon. Visibility one-quarter mile or less at times this morning. Highs ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. Winds out of the northwest around 5 mph in the morning, then shifting to come out of the southwest around 5 mph this afternoon. Chance of rain 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight

Mostly cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms likely in the evening, then a chance of showers after midnight. Patchy fog after midnight. Lows ranging from the lower 60s to the lower 50s. Winds out of the southeast around 5 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, then showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. Highs ranging from the 70s to the lower 80s. Mostly cloudy. Showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, then a chance of showers after midnight. Lows ranging from the lower 60s to the mid-50s. Winds out of the southeast around 5 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.

Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers. Highs ranging from the mid-60s to the lower 70s. Winds out of the southeast around 5 mph.

Hazards

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop across the region today, first forming along the mountain ridges from early to middle afternoon, then migrating east over the foothills and Piedmont through the late afternoon and evening hours. These thunderstorms will all produce cloud to ground lightning, very heavy downpours, and briefly gusty winds. A few of the storms may become severe, with damaging wind gusts above 60 mph the primary threat. Any locations repeatedly affected by the slowly moving storms could experience localized flooding as well. The coverage of the showers and thunderstorms will slowly diminish overnight.

Here are some numbers from the CDC, the NCDHHS, and the Johns Hopkins Dashboard. Macon Media prefers the Johns Hopkins Dashboard because the counts include those non-residents that are left out of the CDC and NCDHHS numbers.

The CDC website [LINK] reports 21,618 people in North Carolina are infected, 728 have died, and infections are widespread, the NCDHHS website [LINK] reports 22,725 confirmed cases from 329,582 targeted tests, and 589 hospitalized and 737 deaths in the state. The Johns Hopkins Dashboard [LINK] reports 22,864 people infected and 778 deaths (these include non-residents located in NC).
