Another cold front will slowly drop southward into our region through mid week providing more of a focus for afternoon and evening showers and storms. Temperatures will warm to above normal on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of the front and cooler on Thursday to the north of the front.

• The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

FRANKLIN -- The Women’s Guild of St. Francis Church will hold its annual Good Stuff Sale Noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 16, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the church, 299 Maple St. in Franklin. The event supports the Guild’s ministry activities. Guests can expect great prices on household and decorative objects, kitchen items, linens, books, personal accessories, toys, tools, exercise equipment, furniture, craft supplies and yard tools including indoor and outdoor plants. Everyone is welcome.

Franklin Amateur Radio Club to Hold Annual Field Day in Highlands

The Franklin Amateur Radio Club (HAMS) will hold its annual Field Day at the Highlands Recreation Center on Saturday, June 24, 2 PM until 6 PM. The center is located at 600 North Street and 4 th Street.

Field Day is amateur radio operators’ (hams) open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill, service to communities and nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and remains the most popular ham radio event.

There are 190 ham radio operators in Macon County.

Anyone, regardless of residency, is welcome at Field Day.

Amateur Radio is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. Anyone interested in learning about Ham radio is welcome. Portable radio stations will be up and operational around 2 PM. Contacts will be made worldwide. As well as in North America. This year the amateur radio operators will also be demonstrating Parks On The Air and Summits On The Air.

Parks on the Air® (POTA) sites are for international portable amateur radio operations that promote emergency awareness and communications from national/federal and state/provincial level parks.

Summits on the Air (SOTA) is designed to make participation possible for all Radio Amateurs and Shortwave Listeners - this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers who operate from home, a local hilltop, or other summits).

Both SOTA and POTA will have stations set up and operators to demonstrate what the hobby is about.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.

1964 – DSV Alvin is commissioned.
1967 – The Six-Day War begins: Israel launches surprise strikes against Egyptian air-fields in response to the mobilisation of Egyptian forces on the Israeli border.
1968 – Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan.
1975 – The Suez Canal opens for the first time since the Six-Day War.
1975 – The United Kingdom holds its first country-wide referendum on membership of the European Economic Community (EEC).
1976 – The Teton Dam in Idaho, United States, collapses. Eleven people are killed as a result of flooding.
1981 – The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that five people in Los Angeles, California, have a rare form of pneumonia seen only in patients with weakened immune systems, in what turns out to be the first recognized cases of AIDS.
1983 – More than 100 people are killed when the Russian river cruise ship Aleksandr Suvorov collides with a girder of the Ulyanovsk Railway Bridge. The collision caused a freight train to derail, further damaging the vessel, yet the ship remained afloat and was eventually restored and returned to service.
1984 – Operation Blue Star: Under orders from India's prime minister, Indira Gandhi, the Indian Army begins an invasion of the Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikh religion.
1989 – The Tank Man halts the progress of a column of advancing tanks for over half an hour after the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.
1993 – Portions of the Holbeck Hall Hotel in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK, fall into the sea following a landslide.
1995 – The Bose–Einstein condensate is first created.
1997 – The Second Republic of the Congo Civil War begins.
1998 – A strike begins at the General Motors parts factory in Flint, Michigan, that quickly spreads to five other assembly plants. The strike lasts seven weeks.
2000 – The Six-Day War in Kisangani begins in Kisangani, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, between Ugandan and Rwandan forces. A large part of the city is destroyed.
2001 – Tropical Storm Allison makes landfall on the upper-Texas coastline as a strong tropical storm and dumps large amounts of rain over Houston. The storm causes $5.5 billion in damages, making Allison the second costliest tropical storm in U.S. history.
2003 – A severe heat wave across Pakistan and India reaches its peak, as temperatures exceed 50 °C (122 °F) in the region.
2004 – Noël Mamère, Mayor of Bègles, celebrates marriage for two men for the first time in France.
2006 – Serbia declares independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro.
2009 – After 65 straight days of civil disobedience, at least 31 people are killed in clashes between security forces and indigenous people near Bagua, Peru.
2015 – An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.0 strikes Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia, killing 18 people, including hikers and mountain guides on Mount Kinabalu, after mass landslides that occurred during the earthquake. This is the strongest earthquake to strike Malaysia since 1975.
2017 – Montenegro becomes the 29th member of NATO.
2017 – Six Arab countries—Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates—cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of destabilising the region.
2018 - US President Donald Trump administration's policy of separating immigrant children from their families violates international law according to the UN
