Rainy and stormy conditions will persist through the remainder of
the workweek as a low pressure system lingers west of the southern
Appalachians. The potential for storms producing heavy rain will
diminish over the weekend as the low moves east and a more typical
June pattern sets in. Another cold front will arrive from the
northwest early next week.

A Flood Watch will be in effect through Thursday afternoon. Please usa caution on area rodways, and if you live in a flood-prone area, keep an eye out for rising water.
Flood Watch
National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
14 AM EDT Thu Jun 22 2023
...FLOOD WATCH NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...
* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be
possible.
* WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia, western North Carolina and
upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, in
northeast Georgia, Franklin, Habersham, Hart, Rabun and Stephens.
In western North Carolina, Macon, Southern Jackson and
Transylvania. In upstate South Carolina, Anderson, Central
Greenville, Cherokee, Greater Oconee, Greater Pickens, Greenville
Mountains, Northern Spartanburg, Oconee Mountains, Pickens
Mountains, Southern Greenville and Southern Spartanburg.
* WHEN...Through this afternoon.
* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers,
creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur
in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be
flooded.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- A low pressure system just west of the southern Appalachians
will keep deep moisture in place over the western Carolinas and
northeast Georgia today. Rounds of heavy rain showers, with a few
embedded thunderstorms, will cross the region from the south
today through this evening. Additional rainfall of up to 1 to 2 inches are
expected over the area, with the highest amounts near the
mountains. This rain will fall on areas that have already
received several inches of rain this week. New flooding could
develop quickly in these circumstances.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Flood Watch for flash flooding means there is a potential for
rapid onset flooding based on current forecasts. Flash flooding is a
very dangerous situation and may impact areas that do not typically
flood. Please monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take
action quickly should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
Rainfall of more than five inches in similar storms has been
associated with an increased risk of landslides and rockslides. If
you live on a mountainside or in a cove at the base of a mountain,
especially near a stream, be ready to leave in advance of the storm
or as quickly as possible should rising water, moving earth, or
rocks threaten. Consider postponing travel along mountain roads
during periods of heavy rainfall.
Low-lying areas adjacent to streams, including campgrounds, are
especially vulnerable to flooding. If you live or are vacationing
next to a stream, please have a plan in place to seek higher ground
once heavy rainfall develops. Flash floods can occur quickly and
overwhelm adjacent low-lying areas with little warning. Once the
stream starts to rise, you may only have minutes to evacuate. Flash
floods can cause catastrophic damage and be powerful enough to sweep
away campers, vehicles, and mobile homes. Consider temporarily
relocating away from streams until the heavy rainfall threat passes.

Tropical Weather Outlook
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
200 AM EDT Thu Jun 22 2023
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
Active Systems:
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical
Storm Bret, located a few hundred miles east of the Windward
Islands.
1. Central Tropical Atlantic (AL93):
Showers and thunderstorms continue to show signs of organization
in association with the area of low pressure located about midway
between the west coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles. If this
trend continues, a tropical depression could form as early as later
this morning while the system moves westward to west-northwestward
at 10 to 15 mph across the central tropical Atlantic.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...90 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...high...90 percent.
Tropical Storm Bret Discussion Number 11
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL032023
1100 PM AST Wed Jun 21 2023
Reports from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate
that Bret has changed little in intensity during the past few hours.
The aircraft reported a central pressure near 999-1000 mb with
maximum 850 mb flight-level winds of 65 kt to the northeast of the
center, along with a maximum surface wind estimate of 56 kt from the
Stepped Frequency Microwave radiometer. Based on these, the initial
intensity remains 55 kt. Satellite imagery shows that Bret
continues to generate strong convection near and northeast of the
center. However, it continues to be affected by northwesterly shear
that is undercutting the storm's outflow pattern.
Little change in strength is likely during the next 24 hours as
Bret approaches the Lesser Antilles. After that time, the cyclone
will encounter increasing vertical wind shear due to an upper-level
trough over the eastern Caribbean. This should cause steady to
rapid weakening, and Bret is now expected to degenerate into an
open trough between 60-72 hr in agreement with the global model
guidance. The new intensity forecast follows the overall trend of
the intensity guidance.
Bret continues to move westward, or 280/14 kt, under the influence
of low- to mid-level ridging to its north. Some increase in
forward speed may occur over the Caribbean as Bret weakens. There
has been little change in the track guidance since the last
advisory, and the new forecast track is an update of the previous
track with the center passing through the Lesser Antilles in about
24 hours. Users are reminded that NHC's track forecasts have
average errors of about 40 n mi at 24 hours, and there is risk of
strong winds and heavy rainfall for several islands within the
Lesser Antilles regardless of exactly where the center crosses the
island chain.
KEY MESSAGES:
1. Bret is forecast to approach the Lesser Antilles through
Thursday and then move across those islands late Thursday and
Thursday night as a strong tropical storm.
2. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for St. Lucia, Martinique,
and Dominica, and there is a risk of flooding from heavy rainfall,
strong winds, and dangerous waves along the coast within the warning
area. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Barbados and St
Vincent and the Grenadines. Additional warnings are possible for
some islands in the Lesser Antilles on Thursday.

Franklin Amateur Radio Club to Hold Annual Field Day in Highlands
The Franklin Amateur Radio Club (HAMS) will hold its annual Field Day at the Highlands Recreation Center on Saturday, June 24, 2 PM until 6 PM. The center is located at 600 North Street and 4 th Street.
Field Day is amateur radio operators’ (hams) open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill, service to communities and nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and remains the most popular ham radio event.
There are 190 ham radio operators in Macon County.
Anyone, regardless of residency, is welcome at Field Day.
Amateur Radio is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. Anyone interested in learning about Ham radio is welcome. Portable radio stations will be up and operational around 2 PM. Contacts will be made worldwide. As well as in North America. This year the amateur radio operators will also be demonstrating Parks On The Air and Summits On The Air.
Parks on the Air® (POTA) sites are for international portable amateur radio operations that promote emergency awareness and communications from national/federal and state/provincial level parks.
Summits on the Air (SOTA) is designed to make participation possible for all Radio Amateurs and Shortwave Listeners - this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers who operate from home, a local hilltop, or other summits).
Both SOTA and POTA will have stations set up and operators to demonstrate what the hobby is about.
Macon Media is still experiencing transportation issues and was unable to get to the courthouse to cover this months meeting. Here is the county-sponsored video of the meeting:

Macon Media will promote nonprofit or civic events if contacted by an organizer of the event. This includes rallies, protests, community forums, and parades. Messeanger Link http://m.me/MaconMediaNews
If you're of a mind, and can afford it, a dollar a month (or more) from enough people will make a huge difference in improving the quality of coverage of local meetings and events, as well as allowing remote weather stations and weather cams to be deployed throughout the county that you will be able to access online.
Currently, 20 people have pledged $99 a month. This is a tremendous help. Please visit www.patreon.com/MaconMedia for more information on how to contribute.
Businesses can underwrite this coverage by day sponsorships, surplus equipment donations, etc. Inquire at editor@maconmedia.com for more information.
Donations accepted for the purpose of supporting this blog and activities related to improving it's operations and my coverage of local festivals and local government meetings.
