GENERAL OUTLOOK

A weak cold front will approach the region from the northwest today and settle south of the area tonight. Drier air will then filter into the area over the weekend into early next week, with lower chances for summertime showers and thunderstorms. Cooler temperatures also arrive over the weekend, with temperatures and humidity then slowly rising again by the middle part of next week.

• The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

Active Systems:
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Don, located over the central Atlantic.

1. Eastern Tropical Atlantic:
A tropical wave located a few hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands is currently interacting with the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The combination of these features is producing a broad area of showers and thunderstorms over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic. While dry air to the north may prevent significant organization during the next few days, environmental conditions could become more conducive for some development by this weekend as the wave moves westward across the central tropical Atlantic.

* Formation chance through 7 days...low...20 percent.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.

1877 – After rioting by Baltimore and Ohio Railroad workers and the deaths of nine rail workers at the hands of the Maryland militia, workers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stage a sympathy strike that is met with an assault by the state militia, killing 20 people and wounding 29. 20 more workers are killed the following day.
