Minor Tremor on Macon-Jackson Line Felt in Macon County

**UPDATE** 1:14pm** The USGS has adjusted the magnitude upward to 2.62 ±0.01 and the depth to 0.8 km ± 1.7 km (0.49 miles ±1 mile)

A minor tremor occurred this afternoon near the Macon and Jackson County line this afternoon. It was a magnitude 2.5 and it took place at 12:30pm and was centered about 300 meters below the surface. Many residents took to social media to confirm what they felt. The map above shows the approximate area where the tremor struck. Since the center of the tremor was near the surface, the impacts will be greater than if it was at a greater depth. Very minor, if any, damage is to be expected.

If you felt it, you can help the USGS by answering a questionnaire at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/se60237487/tellus

Here is a reading from the seismometer in Lake Jocassee moments after the tremor struck.

Updates will be added here as they become available.

Tremors of Magnitude 2.5 or above occur about a dozen times a year within a hundred-mile radius of Franklin, and two or three times a year, they strike here.
