Blizzard of '93 Anniversary Today

The Blizzard of '93, or as it is known nationally, The Storm of the Century, hit Macon County 26 years ago on this date in 1993. By the time the storm was over, upwards of 20 inches or more (depending on your location in the county) was on the ground. The Coweeta Experimental Station recorded 25.5 inches of on the 13th. That amount still stands as the one-day official record for snowfall in Macon County since records started being kept in 1872. Those of us who were alive during that storm will never forget it.

Outlook

Dry high pressure will persist over the region through today before moving off the east coast on Thursday. Meanwhile, a cold front approaching from the west will reach the southern Appalachians Thursday night and cross the region on Friday, bring a good amount of rain with it. Dry high pressure will then follow for the weekend. A weak cold front will arrive from the northwest early next week.

Weather Hazards

Hazardous weather is not expected today.

A moist cold front will cross the region Thursday into Friday. This front will bring a good amount of rainfall and localized flooding of streams due to runoff associated with rather high levels of soil moisture will be possible.
