A strong upper-level ridge will build atop the region over the next few days along with a hot and increasingly humid air mass which will linger for the rest of the week. Expect chances for showers and thunderstorms to gradually increase by the weekend.

Air quality should be in the upper range of green today for the county and mid-to-upper yellow range for the ridgetops.

Partly cloudy skies are expected statewide today with light winds out of the north and isolated thunderstorms possible over the Mountains and Coastal Plain. Otherwise, warm and humid conditions are expected with temperatures rising into the 90s with dewpoints generally in the 60s in the west with 70s possible over the Coastal Plain. This stagnant air mass may allow for ozone readings to pick up into the Code Yellow range from the Foothills east to the Sandhills and interior Coastal Plain, as well as over the ridge tops; Code Green readings will be possible over the coast and the western valleys. Particle pollution readings may also pick up into the Code Yellow range over the southern Foothills, southern Piedmont and Sandhills.

THIS ACTIVITY IS IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT THE RADAR'S OPERATION DURING PERIODS OF COMMERCIAL POWER OUTAGES, SPECIFICALLY WHEN HAZARDOUS WEATHER IS PRESENT.

Here are some numbers from the CDC, the NCDHHS, and the Johns Hopkins Dashboard. Macon Media prefers the Johns Hopkins Dashboard because the counts include those non-residents that are left out of the CDC and NCDHHS numbers.

The CDC website [LINK] reports 85,701 people in North Carolina are infected, 1,503 have died, and infections are widespread, the NCDHHS website [LINK] reports 87,528 confirmed cases from 1,220,486 targeted tests, and 1,040 hospitalized and 1,510 deaths in the state. The Johns Hopkins Dashboard [LINK] reports 87,669 people infected and 1,529 deaths.
