Weather Briefing for Sunday, August 23,2020
Flood Advisory for Highlands Area Untill 6:15am

Here is an abbreviated weather briefing for today through Tuesday night.

Outlook

Abundant tropical moisture flowing into the area around a deep ridge of high pressure will maintain daily precipitation chances through the early week. This high pressure will deepen toward the middle of the week, and temperatures will rise above normal, though precipitation chances will diminish a bit. Hazards

An area northeast of Highlandsis under a Flood Advisory this morning. An image of the impacted area, along with the text of the advisory, is posted below.

Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms producing locally heavy rain. Isolated flash flooding is possible, especially if multiple downpours or thunderstorms pass over the same area, and anywhere that soils remain soaked from heavy rain in the past couple of days. Thunderstorms will pose a risk of cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds. One or two of the storms may produce severe weather in the form of damaging winds.

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
South Central Jackson County in western North Carolina...
Southeastern Macon County in western North Carolina...

Additional rainfall of 1 inch is expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
