GENERAL OUTLOOK

The coldest air of the season so far will continue to be ushered in and bring about widespread freezing temperatures and frost for most of the week. Dry conditions will persist as high pressure moves into the area. A warming trend is expected near the end of the week and temperatures will be back to near normal for the weekend.

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures in the 20s expected.

* WHERE...The mountains of western North Carolina.

* WHEN...From midnight tonight to noon EDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Freezing temperatures will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
