Fallen Powerline Sparks 50-plus acre "Piney Grove Fire" off Sanderstown Road

The initial dispatch to this fire was at 4.58pm that called Franklin VFD to the scene and the NC Forest Service was called two minutes later. Several fire departmentswere eventually called upon to assist with apparautus and manpower, including West Swain VFD from Swain County and Savannah VFD from Jackson County, alonmg with personnel and equipment from the NC Forest Service and US FOrest Service. A dozer from the US Forest was instrumental in putting a line around the fire to stop it from spreading to nearby homes. Local VFDs assisted with putting in handlines and providing structure protection at several nearby residences.

It is expected that today will include extending fire lines, mop up and removing trees and vegetation near the fiore lines that could foster rekindles and the spreading of the fire past the fire lines. Below is the Facebook thread that covered the event from inception to 8.40pm. Some Readers also posted photos of the fire as seen from their homes. [Link to Facebook Post]
