GENERAL OUTLOOK

High pressure will move out this morning as cloudiness increases with the next system approaching from the west. Expect an active weather pattern late this week through next week as a series of upper waves cross over the region. An upper wave crosses the area from the west Thursday night and Friday, bringing showers and thunderstorms. The next wave of low pressure arrives on Sunday and then yet another reaches our region in the middle of next week.

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 expected.

* WHERE...Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Graham, Northern Jackson and Macon Counties.

* WHEN...From 2 AM to 9 AM EDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

Come join us on our first Youth Mental Health and Bullying Rally to raise more awareness about this urgent need for us children. This inaugural event is the first youth led event for Youth Mental Health as far a we know in Franklin NC.

Our event will close with our March from Macon County Court House to Franklin Town Hall.

Local speakers include NC State Senator Kevin Corbin, Franklin Chief of Police Holland, and others

Youth provider organizations will be on site to share resources and education

FRIDAY, MAY 5th

Angel Medical Center to Host Blood Drive From 11am to 4pm

Blood Connection will host a blood drive at Angel Medical Center on Friday, May 5, from 11 am to 4 pm. Blood Connection’s blood mobile will be set up in the parking lot at 124 One Center Drive, Franklin. Each blood donation can save up to 3 lives. Donors need to be at least 16 years old (16-year-olds will need a permission slip which will be available at the blood drive), weigh at least 110 pounds, have an ID, and be in general good health.

Friends of the Greenway Spring Arts and Crafts Event (FROG FAIR) From 10am to 4pm

Friends of the Greenway announce their Spring arts and crafts event. FROG FAIR will be held May 6, 2023 from 10-4 at FROG Quarters, 573 E. Main at the Town bridge in Franklin. Vendor spaces are available (only registration fee goes to FROG)--check our website (littletennessee.org) for registration forms or stop by FROG Quarters. Volunteers needed too. THURSDAY, MAY 4th

Mainspring Walk at the Library 5.30pm

Find a sense of place with Mainspring and the Macon County Public Library. On the first Thursday of each month, we will take a casual 1 mile stroll through the trails behind the library, noticing how the forest, meadow, and river changes with the seasons. Each month we will pick an aspect of nature to explore during our walk, and spend a brief moment learning about the evening’s theme before heading out on the trails to discover the world around us. This event is free and open to the public, and registration is not required to attend. We will meet in the Meeting Room at the Macon County Public Library (149 Siler Farm Rd, Franklin, NC 28734) at 5:30PM, where participants will be introduced to the day’s theme through a quick lesson. The walk will take about an hour and is on a variety of trails, from narrow and sloped to wide and flat. There is one moderate hill during this walk. Join the fun of contra dancing, with beginners’ lessons at 6:30. Suggested donation, $10 per person helps to pay the musicians and callers for their travel and expertise. Hosted by the Arts Council of Macon County. SATURDAY, MAY 27th

Clarks Chapel Fire-Rescue Annual BBQ Fundraiser From 2pm until sold out Plates are $10 each

Clarks Chapel Volunteer Fire Department is hosting their annul BBQ Fundraiser on Saturday, May 27. It will feature Barbeque, Music, Raffles, Silent Auction, and plenty of family fun. The fire department is located at 270 Fulcher Road in Franklin.

1994 – China Airlines Flight 140 crashes at Nagoya Airport in Japan, killing 264 of the 271 people on board.

2002 – Robert Steinhäuser kills 16 at Gutenberg-Gymnasium in Erfurt, Germany before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot.
2005 – Cedar Revolution: Under international pressure, Syria withdraws the last of its 14,000 troop military garrison in Lebanon, ending its 29-year military domination of that country (Syrian occupation of Lebanon).
2015 – Nursultan Nazarbayev is re-elected President of Kazakhstan with 97.7% of the vote.
2018 – American comedian Bill Cosby is convicted of sexual assault.
2019 – Marvel Studios' blockbuster film, Avengers: Endgame, is released, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing the previous box office record of Avatar.
