Hazards

Numerous showers with isolated thunderstorms will push into the North Carolina mountains overnight, ahead of an approaching cold front. Locally heavy rainfall and cloud-to-ground lightning will be the main threats, but isolated damaging wind gusts cannot be ruled out.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue to pose a threat through the day Sunday, then begin to shift east Sunday evening. Snow showers are expected near the Tennessee border starting Sunday afternoon in the highest peaks, then snow levels will fall to 3500 ft by late evening. Minor snow accumulations are expected. In the mountain valleys, rapidly falling temperatures into the 20s may cause wet roads to freeze, resulting in patchy black ice early Monday morning. Also, gusty northwest winds could approach 40 to 50 mph, especially above 3500 ft.
