Remembering Those Who Dies on September 11, 2001

Macon Media has published a list of names of those who died on September 11, 2001, in the terror attacks. A few links about how events unfolded on that day are also included. [LINK]

LOCAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

A cold front moves into the area today becoming stationary through midweek, bringing showers and thunderstorms to our area. Hurricane Florence may make landfall somewhere along the Carolina coast late Thursday, but the extent of impacts to the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia remains uncertain.

A note about Hurricane Florence

Computer models vary significantly, and I (Bobby) thought we'd have a better idea where Florence will be headed by this morning. I was wrong. The path the storm may take is still unclear. If you have a trip to an east coast beach this week to early next week, you should cancel them unless part of your plan is to help with recovery efforts. Impacts to Macon County are impossible to accurately and honestly forecast at this time.

TROPICAL OUTLOOK

The computer models continue to struggle in coming up with a solution that accurately forecasts the movement of FLORENCE. The latest feature to show up is a stall just offshore or just inland for 12 to 30 hours, during which the storm dumps biblical amounts of rain on the east coast and the coastal plain. The NHC consensus 5 Day Cone for 10 pm last night is posted below. (Remember that the forecasts for this storm are changing every few hours as more data from weather instruments in the region, Hurricane Hunters, and weather balloons are added into the computer models.

Tropical Weather Outlook
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
200 AM EDT Tue Sep 11 2018

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Hurricane Florence, located over the west-central Atlantic Ocean, on Hurricane Helene, located over the eastern Atlantic, and on recently downgraded Tropical Storm Isaac, located over the central tropical Atlantic.

1. Showers and thunderstorms are showing some signs of organization over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, however, there are still no signs of a surface circulation. This system is forecast to move slowly northwestward across the Yucatan Peninsula today with limited development. Upper-level winds are forecast to become more conducive for development later in the week, and a tropical depression could form on Thursday or Friday while the disturbance moves across the western Gulf of Mexico. Interests across northeastern Mexico and the coast of Texas and Louisiana should monitor the progress of this system. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are likely over western Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula today.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...30 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...60 percent.

2. A non-tropical area of low pressure is forecast to form along a trough of low pressure located over the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Environmental conditions are conducive for some development, and a tropical or subtropical depression could form by the end of the week while the low meanders over the northeastern Atlantic Ocean.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.
