Daily Weather Briefing and Morning COVID-19 Update for Friday, April 17, 2020

OUTLOOK

Cool and dry high pressure will shift east of the area today, as a cold front approaches from the west. The front will cross our area early Saturday, bringing some rain chances. A wetter storm system is expected to cross the region Sunday into Monday, with dry high pressure returning by Tuesday.

Sunny. Highs in the 60s. Winds out of the south 10 to 15 mph. Between noon and 5pm, relative humidity values will be close to 30% and winds will be gusting in the 15 to 25 mph range. This is not good for outdoor burning, so please hold off on this for today and tomorrow.

Tonight

Partly cloudy in the evening, then mostly cloudy with rain likely after midnight. Lows in the 40s. WInds out of the southwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent.

Saturday

Partly sunny with showers likely in the morning, then sunny in the afternoon. Highs ranging from the upper 50s to the lower 60s. Winds out of the northwest 5 to 10 mph. Gusts up to 25 mph in the morning. Chance of rain 60 percent.

Saturday Night

Mostly clear. Lows in the 30s. Winds out of the northwest around 5 mph, shifting to come out of the southeast after midnight.

Sunday

Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers in the morning then showers with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the 50s to around 60. WInds out of the south around 5 mph. Chance of rain 90 percent.

Sunday Night

Showers with a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, then showers after midnight. Lows in the 40s. Chance of rain 90 percent.


HAZARDS

Outdoor burning could be risky this afternoon as relative humidity values will dip into the 30% range and wind gusts will pick up this afternoon. Other than this, hazardous weather is not expected today.

The CDC website [LINK] reports 5,024 people in North Carolina are infected and that the infections are widespread, the NCDHHS website [LINK] reports 5,123 confirmed cases, 431 hospitalized and 117 deaths in the state. The Johns Hopkins Dashboard [LINK] reports 5,424 people infected and 138 deaths (these include non-residents located in NC).
