GENERAL OUTLOOK

A typical summertime pattern continues with a subtropical ridge in the western Atlantic extending over the southeastern U.S. through at least the middle of the week. Moisture will pool ahead of a cold front approaching from the north on Wednesday and cross the area Thursday. A reinforcing cold front will cross the region from the north on Friday and usher in much drier air and cooler temperatures through the upcoming weekend.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected today with more widespread coverage Wednesday into Thursday. With abundant moisture and potential for locally heavy/persistent rainfall due to slow storm motion, localized flash flooding will be an increasing concern again Wednesday into Thursday. Additionally, strong gusty winds are possible within any strong storm Tuesday through Thursday.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Eastern Tropical Atlantic:
A tropical wave continues to produce a large area of disorganized cloudiness and thunderstorms over the eastern tropical Atlantic a few hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Gradual development of this system is possible and a tropical depression could form around the middle to latter portion of the week before environmental conditions become less favorable by this weekend. This system is expected to move westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the tropical Atlantic during the next several days.

* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent.

1970 – LANSA Flight 502 crashes after takeoff from Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco, Peru, killing 99 of the 100 people on board, as well as two people on the ground. 1971 – The Troubles: The British Army in Northern Ireland launches Operation Demetrius. 1991 – The Italian prosecuting magistrate Antonino Scopelliti is murdered by the 'Ndrangheta on behalf of the Sicilian Mafia while preparing the government's case in the final appeal of the Maxi Trial. 1993 – The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan loses a 38-year hold on national leadership. 1999 – Russian President Boris Yeltsin fires his Prime Minister, Sergei Stepashin, and for the fourth time fires his entire cabinet. 2003 - NC History A flood washes away the Pisgah Covered Brisdge in Randolph County. It is later rebuilt.

2006 – At least 21 suspected terrorists are arrested in the 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot that happened in the United Kingdom. The arrests are made in London, Birmingham, and High Wycombe in an overnight operation.

2013 – Gunmen open fire at a Sunni mosque in the city of Quetta killing at least ten people and injuring 30.

2014 – Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American male in Ferguson, Missouri, is shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer after reportedly assaulting the officer and attempting to steal his weapon, sparking protests and unrest in the city.

2020 - Brazil passes 100,000 COVID-19 deaths, the world's 2nd highest, with over 3 million recorded cases

2020 - Disputed Belarusian presidential election sees long time dictator Alexander Lukashenko officially win 80% of the votes but unofficially lose 60-70% of the votes to main opposition candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Sparks widespread protests in Belarus and international condemnation.
