According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), a minor earthquake of 2.6 magnitude struck Haywood County on Tuesday evening just before 7.30pm. The epicenter was located 38.51 miles to the northeast of the Macon County Courthouse. Earthquakes of this magnitude occur perhaps three or four times a typical year within a hundred-mile radius of Macon County.
As of 10.00pm, 124 people reported to the USGS they had felt the quake. If you felt it, you can fill out a survey on the USGS website [LINK]. The information will assist geologists in studying earthquakes in our region. You have until May 31, 2024, to report your experience.
