GENERAL OUTLOOK

A low pressure system and associated cold front will settle just south of the area today, with high pressure building from the north through Thursday. Another cold front will approach from the northwest on Friday night and cross the area Saturday or Saturday night. Weak high pressure returns on Sunday and remain into early next week.

Stand Off in Cowee Ends With Arrest

• The Sheriff's Office was called out to investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle (a white utility truck) on Cherokee Mine Road late last night. After a deputy arrived, a brief pursuit occured. The truck was discovered abandoned on Gemstone Drive and a female was taken into custody. The driver of the vehicle (who was armed) barricaded himself inside the basement of a building for several hours, starting around 12.46am. He surrendered himself after a brief conversation with Sheriff Holbrooks at 4.26am this morning.

Clarks Chapel Volunteer Fire Department is hosting their annul BBQ Fundraiser on Saturday, May 27. It will feature Barbeque, Music, Raffles, Silent Auction, and plenty of family fun. The fire department is located at 270 Fulcher Road in Franklin.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.
