GENERAL OUTLOOK

Expect an increase in moisture going into the weekend along with much cooler temperatures as an upper low interacts with a coastal cyclone that will move inland over the Carolinas. The upper low will linger over our region into early next week keeping our weather wet along with breezy conditions. The low is forecast to gradually move off the Carolina coast toward mid week with temperatures warming to near normal for this time of year.

Hazards and Tropical Weather



Heavy rainfall is likely this afternoon through Sunday morning across parts of the mountains, foothills and Piedmont of Western North Carolina and for the Upstate of South Carolina generally along and east of Interstate 26.

Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are possible across the area with locally up to 5 inches in the favorable upslope zones of the Appalachians. Localized flooding will be possible with this heavy rainfall. Gusty winds will also develop and a few trees may be blown down due to wet soil conditions.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK

• Damaging 2022 Atlantic hurricane season draws to a close [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration]

The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Southwestern Atlantic:
A non-tropical low pressure system located a couple of hundred miles off the coast of northeastern Florida continues to produce gusty winds and disorganized showers and thunderstorms over portions of the southeastern United States and western Atlantic Ocean. This low is expected to remain a frontal system while it moves northward and inland over the Carolinas tonight or early Sunday.

Even though development into a subtropical or tropical cyclone is not expected, the system will continue producing gusty winds, and dangerous surf and rip current conditions along portions of the southeastern United States coast through Sunday. Heavy rainfall is expected in portions of the Carolinas and Virginia during the next couple of days. Hazardous marine conditions are also expected over the coastal and offshore waters where gale and storm warnings are in effect. A strong coastal storm will move through the state today with widespread rain, heavy at times. Cold and windy conditions are expected. Ozone and fine particulates will drop well into the Code Green range statewide in response to this wet weather.

Outlook

Unsettled and/or cool weather will continue into Monday statewide as a closed upper-level low remains stationary over the Carolinas. Ozone and fine particulates will remain Code Green statewide.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.
