GENERAL OUTLOOK

Dry high pressure remains in place through the rest of the week. Temperatures will remain on a warming trend, ending up well above normal by this weekend. A cold front arrives from the northwest early next week, but precipitation chances look to be limited across much of the forecast area.

Thursday, (10/26/2023) the NCSHP will be conducting an investigation at the scene of the fatal accident [Link to Facebook Post] that occured on Friday, October 20th. One southbound lane of Georgia Road (US23/441) from near Eller and Owen Furniture to Shope Road will be closed. Please use caution and slow down in this area and be on the lookout for peronnel in or near the roadway. .

• The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10, with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

Based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, to expire at the end of the day on May 11, 2023. Macon County Public Health will stop publishing weekly COVID updates but will continue to monitor local case levels and trends. In the event that case counts increase significantly, MCPH will notify the public and resume weekly COVID updates.

1995 – An avalanche hits the Icelandic village of Flateyri, destroying 29 homes and burying 45 people, and killing 20.

1999 – The United Kingdom's House of Lords votes to end the right of most hereditary peers to vote in Britain's upper chamber of Parliament.

2000 – A wave of protests forces Robert Guéï to step down as president after the Ivorian presidential election.

2001 – The United States passes the USA PATRIOT Act into law.

2002 – Approximately 50 Chechen terrorists and 150 hostages die when Russian special forces troops storm a theater building in Moscow, which had been occupied by the terrorists during a musical performance three days before.

2003 – The Cedar Fire, the third-largest wildfire in California history, kills 15 people, consumes 250,000 acres (1,000 km2), and destroys 2,200 homes around San Diego.

2015 – A 7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes in the Hindu Kush mountain range in South Asia, killing 399 people and leaving 2,536 people injured.

2017 – At a level crossing of the Hanko–Hyvinkää railway line, a passenger train collides with an off-road truck of the Nyland Brigade in Raseborg, Finland; four people die and 11 are injured.
