2019 Veterans Day in Franklin, NC




Earlier today, there was a parade, concert, and ceremonies marking the local observance of Veterans Day in Franklin, NC. The event was organized by the Town of Franklin. Veterans and parade participants gathered in the lower parking lot at the town hall in order to assemble for the parade. Others gathered along Main Street to wait for the parade to start.

The parade featured veterans marching in groups with their associated war or time of service, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, The Cold War, and Iraq and Afghanistan. The Franklin High School Marching Panther Regiment also participated, as did several period vehicles and scouts who held the banners marking the various times of service for each group of veterans.



After the parade, people gathered for the day's program, which began with a concert by the Franklin High School Marching Panther Regiment, led by Buddy Huckabee.



After the concert, Mayor Bob Scott welcomed everyone with brief remarks, among them a recognition that the band would be playing during the half-time of the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. He noted enough money had been raised so the band could also visit the World War II Memorial located nearby. The mayor also remembered Bob Litten, USN (ret) who passed away since last Veterans Day and had participated in many veterans' ceremonies over the years. Franklin Police Officer Dwayne Cabe sang the National Anthem, dedicating it to the memory of Lee Whitaker and Junior Patton, veterans who recently passed away. Grace Johnson gave the invocation and Barbara McRae, Vice-Mayor of Franklin, led the Pledge of Allegiance and gave brief remarks in remembrance of her father, Colonel Robert Sears, A World War II veteran and POW who passed away in November 2017 at 101 years old.



Mardy Ashe, of the Daughters of the American Revolution, spoke about those who served and gave their lives during the American Revolution, remarking about the 11 Revolutionary War soldiers who are known to be buried in Macon County.



The Keynote Speaker was Reverend Steve Reeves, a Vietnam Veteran. He spoke about his memories of Vietnam, his return from the war, and the history of America, remarking about the bravery of those who have served in our military and how far our nation has come in so short a time.



Members of the American Legion Post 108 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7339 performed the wreath-laying ceremony and Ted Jackson played taps before Mayor Bob Scott closed this year's observance of Veterans Day in Franklin.
