Weather Hazards
A front will bring rainfall to the county today with heavy rainfall expected and the potential for flooding in locations with poor drainage. The locations expected to receive over 2 inches are the western section (Wayah Mountains and west), the southern section of the county and the Highlands Plateau. Other hazards include excessive water in the roadways like standing water and water running across the roadway where drainage is poor. Please increase the following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you so that your reaction time can be increased if they hydroplane for going too fast for conditions. You should decrease your travel speed to lessen the chance of hydroplaning yourself. The best option would be to stay off the roads during and immediately after a heavy rain shower.
Below is information from the National Weather Service regarding this potentially hazardous weather event.
NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook
Widespread rainfall is expected today in association with a passing cold front and a low-pressure system. Localized heavy rainfall in excess of 2 inches is possible and isolated nuisance flooding may result, especially for common, flood-prone areas of the southern mountains of North Carolina and northeast Georgia.
**Note** A Tropical Weather Outlook section has been added to the daily weather briefing for the Atlantic Hurricane Season, and since those tend to run long when there is activity, that section has been added between the daily forecasts for the four regions of the county and the almanac section so people can get to their daily forecasts with minimal interference.
