Cold and dry air remains over the region Wednesday and Thursday. Stronger wind gusts across the mountains with widespread freezing temperatures into Thursday morning. Dry conditions continue and temperatures warm again toward the end of the week and through the weekend.

A Freeze Warning will be in effect Until 10am this morning. A widespread freeze is also expected Wednesday night into daybreak Thursday, with lows ranging from 20 to 25 degrees. These temperatures will likely kill any tender vegetation left outdoors.

Higher elevations in the mountains will see single digit wind chill values early this morning.

...FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EDT WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures mainly from 20 to 25 degrees across the mountains, and from 27 to 32 degrees across the foothills and Piedmont.

* WHERE...Northeast Georgia, most of western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina.

* WHEN...From midnight tonight to 10 AM EDT Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS... Temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing again Wednesday night.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
